Brandon Ingram: Early Life

While Ingram came of age in a one-story house on Highland Avenue in Kinston, his brother Donovan lived in a different place but would spend weekends teaching Brandon basketball. Kinston had a high crime rate, but Ingram chose to concentrate on basketball.

Ingram’s brother allowed him to play with him and his older friends before becoming a teenager. This was “the best thing that has ever happened to my game,” he said.

Bo, his brother, played college basketball for South Plains College from 2008 to 2010 and UT Arlington from 2010 to 2012.

Stackhouse became Brandon’s Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) coach and coached the young basketball player by the time Brandon was in eighth grade.

Those influences “took me to another level,” according to Ingram, who owes his success to his father. Brandon’s father was a high school and collegiate referee. According to his father, “Both mentally and physically, he was trained correctly.

He grew up knowing the game’s rules. Ingram spent his entire high school basketball career at Kinston High School, where he helped lead the team to four consecutive state championships.

High School Career

During his first year at Kinston, Brandon Ingram was a member of the varsity basketball team’s bench, but his role grew over time.

In his 1st year with the Kinston Vikings, the team won the 2012 NCHSAA 2-A boys basketball state championship in Reynolds Coliseum, defeating Cuthbertson High School by three points.

Ingram attended the NBPA Top 100 Camp on June 19, 2014, at John Paul Jones Arena in Virginia after his junior year ended.

He started competing with his high school team at the annual East Coast Invitational (ECI), an off-season event in his home state, rather than play in an AAU tournament in the Atlanta area later that summer.

The athlete was named MVP of the state championship game after scoring 28 points, five blocks, and ten rebounds in a win over East Lincoln High School at the Dean E. Smith Center in his final high school basketball game.

Ingram was a five-star recruit and regarded as one of the top high school prospects in the 2015 class. ESPN and Scout ranked him as the No. 3 overall recruit, while Rivals ranked him as the No. 4 overall recruit.

College Career

Ingram started his college basketball career by playing two exhibition matches against Florida Southern and Livingstone.

Ingram scored 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting in his Duke debut against Siena. He scored 21 points in the second game to help Duke beat Bryant in the 2K Sports Classic.

He set a career-high with 26 points and 14 rebounds in a home win over Georgia Southern on December 12, 2015, and blocked a career-high six shots in a home win over Virginia Tech in January 2016.

In his ACC debut, he scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Boston College in the same month.

Duke defeated NC State in the second round of the ACC Tournament but lost in the quarterfinals to Notre Dame. Duke received the fourth seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament and defeated UNC Wilmington in the first round.

Despite 24 points from Ingram, Duke was defeated by Oregon in the Sweet 16 after defeating Yale in the second round. Ingram declared for the 2016 NBA draft on April 4, 2016, preceding his final three years of college eligibility.

Professional Career

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Ingram with the second overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft on June 23, 2016.

He was the second-youngest player drafted in 2016, at 18 years old. The athlete signed his rookie scale contract with the Lakers on August 23, 2016.

He made his Lakers debut on October 26, 2016, scoring nine points off the bench in a 120–114 victory over the Houston Rockets in the team’s season opener.

Brandon had a career-high 11 assists in a 138–128 overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 17, 2019. In a 121–105 defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers on January 29, he set a career-high with 36 points.

The Lakers traded Ingram to the New Orleans Pelicans on July 6, 2019. Ingram set a new career-high by scoring 40 points in a loss to the Brooklyn Nets on November 4, 2019.

He surpassed that career-high on January 16, 2020, when he scored 49 points in a 138–132 overtime win over the Utah Jazz.

In his first season with the Pelicans, he was named the NBA All-Star team. After averaging 23.8 points per game, he was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. Per game, he averaged 6.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

Ingram had 33 points, nine assists, and a game-winning three-pointer to lead the Pelicans to a 128–125 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on January 11, 2022.

Brandon Ingram: Injury

In the NBA All-Star 2020, Brandon had surgery in March 2021 for a deep venous thrombosis, also common as a blood clot, in his right arm, which cut short his third season with the Lakers.

Part of his rib was removed during the two-hour procedure, which impacted his lungs and respiration.

Doctors had him operate a machine that prompted him to inhale air, with a corresponding tube shooting up and down, indicating how much pressure he could produce.

Ingram felt empty because he couldn’t dribble a basketball every day. He spent the next five months getting back on his feet.

He took painkillers every three to four hours at first. His appetite had waned. He didn’t like being unable to manage his affairs.

He’d watch highlights of himself performing to remind himself that the player in the game was still him, that just months before, he’d finally broken through to play some of his best basketball.

Every time Ingram touches a basketball these days, he is aware that he may one day be unable to do so. So, even when he’s not playing, he’s still motivated.

Player Profile

Ingram, who stands 6 feet 8 inches tall (2.03 m) and weighs 196 pounds (89 kg), is primarily a small forward.

His long arms, extending to a 7-foot 3-inch wingspan and 9-foot 1-inch standing reach, enable him to get his shot off over defenders and block shots on the defensive end.

Ingram has been compared to Kevin Durant on numerous occasions.

The teenager, like Durant, has been chastised for his frail physique; however, one Western Conference coach claims that Ingram is in good shape.

After a Team USA practice, Durant told reporters that Ingram is “the first person I could look at and feel like I’m looking in the mirror.”

In his rookie season, Coach Luke Walton used Ingram as a point forward because “it helps engage [Ingram] in the game.”

FAQs

Is Brandon Ingram diet conscious?

Brandon prefers a healthier diet that includes a lot of green vegetables when it comes to food. He uses Bi-Protein of Bi-Pro USA for protein shakes, which costs over $39.

Is Brandon Ingram elite?

Ingram is a great offensive player, but if he wants to be a superstar in the league, he needs to improve his defense. When you look at the best wings in the company, such as Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, you’ll notice that they’re two-way players, not just scorers.
