Gabby Douglas | Early Life And Childhood

Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas, aka Gabie Douglas, was born on December 31, 1995, in Virginia, United States.

Gabby spent her childhood in beautiful roaming around the beautiful beaches of Virginia.

She was born to Timothy Douglas (father) and Natalie Hawkins-Douglas (mother). Apart from that, she has two older sisters who have a significant role as a gymnast.

When Gabby turned six, her sisters requested their mom to enroll Gabby in gymnastics class, to which their mother agreed.

When she turned eight, Gabby was already winning many championships and tournaments. In 2004 Douglas won the state championship named Level 4 all-around gymnastics.

Undoubtedly, Gabby was doing great in her career, but at that time, her hometown didn’t have good training centers, so she had to move to Iowa to practice with her coach Liang Chow.

However, her family couldn’t shift because her siblings studied in Virginia. Therefore, only Gabby left her family at fourteen and stayed with a host family.

In the beginning, Gabby was homesick; the constant memory of the house and family troubled her. However, she focused on her training, and her journey as a professional began.

Douglas made her career debut in 2008 at U.S. Classic in Houston, Texas. In that event, Gabby secured the 10th position; the same year, she secured the 16th position in Visa Championship.

However, she was so small and new in this gymnastics world she was not qualified for Junior Woman’s National Team.

Even though Gabby had a good start in 2008, her 2009 was not as expected. At the beginning of 2009, she suffered a fracture in her wrist. As a result, she missed the Covergirl U.S. Classic competition. 

In 2010, Gabby returned from Supergirl Cup, where she secured the fourth position all-around. She also won silver for her country at the Junior Championship.

However, Douglas realized in 2014 she had to improve her skills. She had to move out of Virginia, And hence, she moved to wonTexas at 14 to train under Liang chow.

At first, Liang was skeptical about Gabby, but later, he recognized her talent and accepted to train her. At the same time, Douglas was impressed by Chow and his training methodologies.

But sadly, Gabby couldn’t show much of her talent as she got injured again in July. But that didn’t let her hopes down, and she used that time to excel in her bar skills.

Senior Year 

In 2011, Gabby got a chance to compete in the City of Jesolo Trophy, where she came in second place. Her team won gold in that match, which was her first ever gold in any competition.

After that, she won a silver medal in the uneven bar at The Covergirl Classic. That same year, her team again won gold in World Championship.

In 2012, Gabby scored the highest total all-around for the first time in her career. After that, in 2014, Gabby moved out of Missy’s home and went to L.A. to be with her family.

After some months, she returned to Iowa to train under Chaw to prepare herself for the Olympics. However, she made Kittia her coach in August and started training under him.

Nonetheless, after so much hard work and dedication, the American gymnast finally returned and helped her team win gold for her country.

She went to the World Selection Camp in 2014; she didn’t let that opportunity go, so Douglas was selected as one of the members of the U.S. Team, and the rest is history.

Not only did Douglas show her gymnastics skills, but she also won the gold for her country. That was the first time she caught everyone’s attention and was well-praised.
