Makur was born on 4 November 2000 in Nairobi, Kenya, to South Sudanese parents. But, he grew up in Perth, Western Australia, along with his siblings, six brothers and a little sister. 

However, we are still not aware of his parent’s and siblings’ names and professions in detail. Makur moved o Perth when he was just one year old.

 Following that, he played high school basketball in North America. Besides basketball, he showed maximum interest in playing football as a striker.

He went to St. Andrews Catholic Primary School and later on attended Irene McCormack Catholic College for high school.

Born on November 4, 2000, he is 20 years old by now. Well, he is too young to achieve a great height at this point in his career.

Makur is a tall and lanky kind of guy. He has a sky-high height of 6 feet 11 inches and weighs almost 107 kg.

Despite having an interest in football, he got stuck with basketball because of his height. However, he takes his height, weight, wingspan as a god-given tool.

The sole reason that made him stay far from his whole family for many years. Makur scored 9.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game for his freshman year at high school.

The next year, he switched to a college-preparatory school named The Tech Academy in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. His cousins, Thon and Matur Maker, unsheathed him to The Techs.

Not only that, it was through his cousin’s help that he came under the guidance of Liberian-born Ed Smith, the basketball coach, and guided for life.

Makur also accompanied his brother Matur and played in the  National Preparatory Association and The Grind Session. The Tech Academy got closed in the next year, and he sat for home-schooling.

Makur went through a year of loss as he got sidelined because of a foot injury for the 2017-18 season.

After recovering from the foot injury, he continued his high school journey with Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, California.

He received All-Trinity League first team and earned All-County second-team honors in a paid daily newspaper, Orange Country Register.

Makur had a question mark in his eligibility as he missed out for a year and drained his eight semesters of eligibility. 

He again switched to another preparatory high school, Pacific Academy, in  Irvine, California, where he was planning to enter NBA drafts in 2020 that too in the middle of

Makur joined Hillcrest Preparatory High School to finish the rest of his season.

It was heard that Makur submitted all the paperwork to determine his eligibility for the NBA drafts 2020 in October 2019. He pretty much made up his mind to enter the NBA draft and later declared too.

Although Makur fell two credits short of high school graduation, he was allowed eligibility by the NBA. However, in the end, he opted to play for the College rather than in the NBA league.

Also, there was a different purpose to commit to HBCU as he wanted to bring some positive changes in society despite being the highest-ranked player.

He wanted to set an example for the black people, most probably to get more active for HBCU programs.

As per the major recruiting agencies such as Rivals, 247 Sports, ESPN, he was ranked one of the best centers in the 2020 recruiting class.
