Early Life, Family & Career

On February 25, 1997, Thon Maker was born in Wau, South Sudan. His parents detail are currently unavailable, but they belonged to the Dinka community.

A violent civil war was going on in his country when Thon was born. So, obviously, it was very tough even to survive in Sudan at that time. Eventually, his uncle, a government employee, arranged for him and his family to escape to Uganda.

In 1983, the Second Sudanese Civil War had begun and ended only in 2005.

After briefly staying in Uganda, Thon and his family members migrated to Australia. He attended a local school in Perth where he had his own brother and cousins to play with during his spare time.

He mainly played soccer as a kid. As Thon and his brothers were taller than the average children, they usually had more advantages in any sport than others.

Fortunately, Edward Smith, a basketball coach and talent hunter noticed young Thon when playing with local kids in Perth. Smith offered his aunt to take Maker to Sydney to practice basketball.

Soon after his aunt agreed, Thon began playing St. John Basketball Association in Sydney. In 2011, both Smith and Maker went to the USA to attend a basketball camp in Texas.

Thon was already a skillful player when he first visited the USA. With Edward’s persuasion, he decided to enroll in the Carlisle High School in Virginia and continue his studies and basketball career.

Besides, his brother, Matur, and cousin, Makur, are professional basketball players. Likewise, his other brother, Maker, is a soccer player. In addition, he has a sister named Ajak.

Thon Maker | Career

High School Career

Maker had no idea that he would play high school in the USA when he first came there in 2011. However, he felt that it would be much easier for him to get into the NBA if he practiced playing in the USA rather than in Australia.

Thon attended two different schools in Louisiana before enrolling at Carlisle school in Virginia. His mentor, Edward Smith, greatly contributed in getting admission there.

He played for only two years for the Carlisle school’s team, but he had remarkable records in both seasons. He was great in every aspect, most notably in scoring, rebounding, and blocking.

Combining his first and second seasons, he averaged 22.2 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game. Thon even secured the Gatorade Best Player of the Year (Virginia).

However, he decided to abandon the rest of the seasons at Carlisle and joined the Athlete Institute in Ontario, Canada. Edward Smith was the assistant coach at that institute.

In addition, he and his brother enrolled at Orangeville District Secondary School.

He continued playing great for the Athlete Institute and the Orangeville school until 2016. However, in the meantime, he left Orangeville to participate in the Nike Hoop Summit organized in Oregon.

He later rejoined the Orangeville Prep and played for them in the 2015-16 season. His gameplay throughout his high school seasons was quite extraordinary, and hence, many universities in the USA were trying their best to recruit him to their team.

However, he decided to skip his whole college career and declared for the 2016 NBA draft.

Professional Career

The Milwaukee Bucks chose him as the 2016 NBA draft’s first-round 10th pick. With this pick, Maker became the first player to get drafted in the NBA after the 2005 Collective Bargaining Agreement was issued.

He initially made a good impression on spectators by playing exceptionally for the Bucks in the NBA Summer League. However, it all watered down when he began laying the regular NBA season.

Although he performed better in some matches, his overall performance in the rookie season was a disaster. On top of that, the team allowed him very little playtime. He averaged just 4.0 points per game in his first season.

The athlete played one and a half seasons with the Bucks after his rookie season but showed no sign of improvement. Even though the team management allowed him to play for more time in the second season, he failed.

The Bucks traded him to the Detroit Pistons while the 2018-19 season was still going on. He played around 29 matches for the Pistons that season. Even though he gave his career-best performance, it was hardly impressive.

He played two more NBA seasons before the NBA clubs gave up on him. The Detroit Pistons provided him with more playtime so that he would improve, but it was of no help.

Maker played briefly for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2020-21 season before being involved with the Israeli club, Hapoel Jerusalem.

As of now, he is with the NBA G League club, Long Island Nets.

Apart from the league games, he has appeared in a few international tournaments for the Australian national basketball team.
