Nell Fortner was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She completed her high school education at New Braunfels High School in Texas, where she earned recognition as an all-state basketball player and received Parade All-American honors.

Commencing, she was awarded a dual-sport scholarship to the University of Texas, participating in basketball and volleyball from 1978 to 1982.

During her time at Texas, Fortner debuted with USA Basketball as a part of the 1978 U.S. Olympic Festival South team, winning a silver medal.

On the academic front, she earned her undergraduate degree in physical education from the University of Texas in 1982.

Later, she obtained a graduate degree in education from Stephen F. Austin in 1987.

Along with being a successful coach, Fortner has also furthered her academic life. By obtaining degrees in physical education and, later, a master’s, she has diversified her portfolio.

The lessons she learned from her college education have also come of great use in her coaching.

Furthermore, Nell has also had two stints working as a broadcaster and analyst for ESPN.

In her capacity at ESPN, she stayed actively involved in NCAA basketball, serving as a commentator for some of the top regular-season and postseason games.
