Named 1987 Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year, Allison consistently competed at a high level, finishing third in the standings in 1991 and 1992.

NASCAR honored him as one of its 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998 and inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 2019.
