The World Is Mourning The Death Of Former Football Coach, William “Bill” Thomas Eanes Sr.

William “Bill” Thomas Eanes Sr., 94, tragically passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

Born on September 23, 1930, he was the son of Cecil Clay Eanes and Virginia Carickhoff.

As a football coach, he dedicated 30 years to the North Carolina school system.

Additionally, he served as a teacher and principal at Smith Grove, Pinebrook, and South Davie schools, respectively.

Former LR Bear Bill Had A Distinguished Coaching Career!

In his early years, Bill played football at Duke University from 1950 to 1952.

After his military service, he played at Lenoir-Rhyne College from 1953 to 1954, where he was team captain.

He earned his Master’s in Education from East Carolina University and an Education Specialist Degree from Appalachian State University.

Bill was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was involved as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and part of The Session.

He loved sports, especially playing golf and following Duke athletics.

He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Pauline Ribet Eanes, and his brothers, Jim and Cecil Eanes Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Terri Eanes, his son, William Thomas Eanes Jr. and his wife, Carol, and his grandsons, Drew and Matt Eanes.

A funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18, at the First Presbyterian Church.

Rev. Dana Fruits and Pastor Scott Eanes officiated the service, which was followed by interment at Rose Cemetery.
