Annette Sanderson was a devoted wife, mother, and a big cheerleader of the Alabama basketball community, providing steady support to her husband, Wimp Sanderson.

Wimp Sanderson is a former American college basketball coach best known for his tenure at the University of Alabama from 1980 to 1992. He later coached at Arkansas–Little Rock from 1994 to 1999.

Tragically, his wife, Annette Sanderson, passed away peacefully in her home in Birmingham, AL, on April 30, 2025, at the age of 86.

The University of Alabama men’s basketball program first announced her passing publicly.

The program released a statement mourning her loss and highlighting her role as a mother figure to Alabama basketball players, stating that:

She was a mother figure to the players Wimp coached, always offering support and love to student-athletes.

Her passing has undoubtedly left a profound impact on both her family and community, as they have lost a pillar of strength.

Wimp Sanderson And His Late Wife, Annette, Were Married For 67 Years!

Annette and Wimp Sanderson’s relationship began in high school, where they met at Coffee High School in Florence, Alabama.

They married in October after Annette’s senior year of high school, beginning a marriage that lasted 67 years.

Together, they raised three sons: Jim, Scott, and Barry Sanderson, who followed in their father’s footsteps and became coaches.

Their family expanded to include 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Annette Was Deeply Involved In Her Husbands’ Coaching Career!

Sarah Annette Harrison Sanderson, born on November 19, 1938, in Florence, Alabama, was described as the ultimate coach’s wife.

She worked as a real estate agent for 12 years before transitioning to focus on her family.

A big supporter of Sanderson’s coaching career, she played a significant role in shaping the Alabama basketball community. Players often described her as a maternal figure.

Moreover, she was known for picking out Wimp’s iconic plaid jackets, a signature look synonymous with his coaching tenure.

In 1987, Annette told The Birmingham News that she was very keenly focused on the game, saying:

I’m pretty vocal at the games. People that go to games can’t believe it’s me because I’m normally a quiet person.

Annette was more than a wife and a mother; she was the heart of her family. She is survived by her husband, three sons, and their families.

Her absence is deeply felt by all who knew her, as she was the source of love and inspiration.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Annette Sanderson’s family, friends, and well-wishers.

Rest In Peace, Beautiful Soul!
