Hendersonville, TN: Beech High Football Placed on Probation After Handshake-Line Brawl With Rockvale

Two Tennessee high school football programs are starting their 2026 seasons under a cloud after a fight broke out between their teams during a preseason scrimmage.

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association announced penalties this week against Beech High School and Rockvale High School following the July 31 incident.

What Happened During the Scrimmage

According to TSAA officials, the altercation began in the handshake line after the scrimmage between the two teams concluded. Multiple players from both sides were involved, and officials assessed unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against players, bench personnel, and other non-players from both programs.

Both schools moved quickly to get ahead of the situation by imposing their own suspensions before TSAA issued its ruling, but that did not spare either program from further discipline.

Beech, located in Hendersonville and part of Division I Class 5A, will open its season at home against Green Hill on August 21. Several Buccaneers players will sit out that game due to suspensions and won’t return to the field until Week 2 against Mount Juliet.

The program was also placed on probation for the season and ordered to pay a $500 fine. Beech has been one of the steadier programs in the state over the past two decades, reaching the championship game in 2022 and posting an 11-2 record in each of the past two years under coach Anthony Crabtree, though it hasn’t captured a state title since 2012.

Rockvale Faces Steeper Consequences

Rockvale, a Division I Class 6A program near Murfreesboro, was already serving probation for a self-reported recruiting violation before the brawl occurred.

As a result of the new incident, TSAA extended that probationary period all the way through the 2027-28 school year. The Rockets, who also self-imposed suspensions on some players, must pay a matching $500 fine. TSAA has not yet released which specific players will be held out when Rockvale opens its season on August 21.

Rockvale has struggled since the program launched in 2019, posting only one winning season in that span, and now enters the year facing an extended cloud of probation on top of the fallout from the fight.

Both schools appear focused on moving past the incident as the regular season approaches, though the suspensions and probationary status will follow both programs into the fall.
