David Alexander Madison III, known affectionately as “3,” “Coach,” and “Bart” by those closest to him, died peacefully on September 21, 2026, in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. He was 84.
According to an obituary published by Burroughs Funeral Home & Cremation Services on September 27, Madison was born May 29, 1942, in Lexington, Virginia, to Mary Elizabeth Holts Madison and David Alexander Madison II.
Madison graduated from Lylburn Downing High School in 1960 before earning his degree from Bluefield State College in 1964. He went on to devote more than four decades to education and athletics, building a career that allowed him to influence generations of students and athletes.
A Career Built Around Students and Athletics
During his 40 year career, Madison served in several educational and athletic roles at Mifflin High School, Osbourn High School, the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Those who knew him remembered him not only as a teacher and coach but also as a mentor and source of encouragement. His work with young people became an important part of his life, with former students and athletes among those who continued to value the lessons he shared.
Outside his professional life, Madison was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Surfside Moose Lodge 2351. He was also an enthusiastic sports fan who remained loyal to the Washington Redskins and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Family Remembers His Warm Personality
Madison enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was known for his love of good food, conversation and long drives. Some of his favorite moments included having lunch while looking over the marsh in Murrells Inlet and visiting Huntington Beach State Park to search for alligators.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Madison; children Alysia “Sweetsie” Madison, David Alexander “Dukes” Madison IV and Farrah Madison; stepchildren Lisa Malie and Jason Wilsher; grandchildren Jazmine Genovese, Jada Genovese, David A. Madison V, Darius Madison, Victoria Malie, Olivia Malie, Emily Wilsher, Noah Wilsher and Reed Wilsher; and great-grandson Luka Scott.
He is also survived by extended family members, former students, athletes and lifelong friends.
Madison was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Mike Madison and his nephew Doug Madison.
The family has requested memorial contributions in his name be made to the Bluefield State University Foundation or Moose Charities in lieu of flowers. Burroughs Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Murrells Inlet is assisting the family with arrangements.
