Charlotte County, FL: Educator, Coach and Musician Mike Riley Dies After Decades of Community Service

This article was last updated by on

Mike Riley, a longtime Charlotte County educator, musician and community volunteer, has died, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

Riley was a familiar and respected figure across Charlotte County, where his work in education, music and community service touched many people over several decades. His death was announced by the sheriff’s office on October 6, 2026, prompting tributes to a man remembered for his generosity and commitment to the community.

A Career Dedicated to Charlotte County

Riley spent decades working with Charlotte County Public Schools. Public records and archived school materials identify him in several roles, including school and community relations officer, community liaison and adult education administrator.

According to a 2020 profile from the Punta Gorda Elks, Riley spent about 40 years working as an educator with Charlotte County Public Schools. He also became known publicly through his involvement in community programs and local events.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell remembered Riley as someone whose influence extended well beyond his immediate circle.

Prummell said Riley made a meaningful impact through his professional career, his music and the way he treated people. He also described Riley as someone whose personality stood out, joking that the only thing louder than Riley’s voice was his wardrobe.

Riley’s community service earned him recognition from several organizations. The Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce named him its 2012 Pacesetter Award recipient. He was also inducted into the Leadership Charlotte Hall of Fame.

The Punta Gorda Elks presented Riley with its Grand Lodge Americanism Award in 2020, recognizing his work with children and the broader community.

Music and Community Service Were a Major Part of His Life

Riley was perhaps equally well known for his work with The BoogieMen, a Charlotte County rock and soul band he founded in 1990. He served as the group’s rhythm guitarist and leader for decades.

The band became closely associated with charitable events throughout the area. Organizers of a fundraiser held in August 2026 said The BoogieMen had performed at 185 charity events during its 36 year history. Those performances supported children, veterans and nonprofit organizations.

The fundraiser, called “The Life of Riley,” was organized to recognize Riley’s decades of community involvement while raising money for the Backpack Kidz program.

Riley was also a charter member of the Peace River Rotary Club. His involvement in local organizations reflected a long standing commitment to helping others.

His connection to Charlotte County went back more than four decades. Riley had spoken publicly about watching the area recover following Hurricane Charley and remained active in the community in recent years.

In May 2025, he appeared on the Partnership for the Arts Group’s “Where We Talk Art” podcast, discussing his life, music career, The BoogieMen and the death of his wife.

Riley leaves behind a legacy built around education, music, service and kindness. For many in Charlotte County, his name will remain connected to the people and causes he spent decades supporting.
