William “Bill” Lee Hughes III, a longtime football and soccer coach, educator, husband, father, and grandfather, died on October 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy shaped by decades of service to students and athletes across Texas.

Hughes was born on May 30, 1956, in Austin, Texas, to Bill Jr. and Barbara. He later attended the University of Texas at Arlington, beginning a journey that would lead him to spend more than four decades working in education and athletics.

His obituary, published by Wade Funeral Home and Crematory, remembers him as a devoted family man whose influence extended well beyond the playing field. Throughout his career, he helped young people develop discipline, perseverance, confidence, and character through sports.

Bill Hughes Dedicated More Than 40 Years to Coaching

Hughes coached football and soccer for more than 40 years, earning numerous awards and honors during his career. He served schools and communities across Texas, including Mineral Wells, Mount Vernon, Mansfield, Irving Nimitz, Kennedale, Maypearl, Ennis, and Burleson Centennial.

For Hughes, coaching was about much more than winning games. He believed in helping students learn important lessons that would stay with them throughout their lives. His commitment to athletes, fellow educators, and the communities he served became a defining part of his professional legacy.

Former players and colleagues will remember the time he invested in others and the encouragement he provided throughout his career. His work helped shape the experiences of countless young athletes, many of whom carried those lessons beyond their school years.

Although his coaching accomplishments brought recognition, his family remembered him for the relationships he built and the care he showed to the people around him.

Family Remembers His Love for Life’s Simple Pleasures

Hughes shared his life with his wife, Beth, and was a proud father to Travis, Sarah, Reid, Cat, Patrick, and Gillian, as named in the family details provided in his obituary. He especially treasured his five grandchildren, Grayson, Mack, Everett, Brooks, and Molly.

Spending time with his grandchildren brought him immense happiness. Watching them grow and creating memories with his family were among the most meaningful parts of his life.

Away from coaching, Hughes enjoyed playing golf, listening to Texas country music, and smoking briskets. He appreciated activities that brought people together, whether around a barbecue, on a golf course, or during family gatherings.

His family described a man whose greatest accomplishments could not be measured by trophies or awards. His devotion to his loved ones and the lives he influenced remained at the heart of his legacy.

A visitation and celebration of life for Hughes is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Wade Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway in Arlington, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Arlington Humane Society or the Texas High School Coaches Association Benevolence Fund.

Hughes will be remembered by his family, former athletes, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched through his dedication to education, athletics, and family.
