Francis X. Gagliano, widely known as “Coach Gags,” has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in track and field and generations of athletes who benefited from his guidance. He passed away peacefully on October 25, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Gagliano’s obituary was published by Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial on October 27. Over a coaching career spanning approximately 60 years, he became one of the most respected figures in American collegiate and distance running, helping athletes reach national championships and the Olympic Games.

Born on March 20, 1937, in the Bronx, New York, Gagliano was the son of Perry and Clara Gagliano. He attended Mount Saint Michael Academy, where he excelled as an All Metropolitan quarterback, before continuing his football career at the University of Richmond.

He later played professional football in Canada for the Hamilton Tiger Cats and the London Lords. He also served eight years in the Marine Corps Reserves.

Gagliano married Roberta Hale Arnold in 1961, and the couple built their family life in New Jersey, raising four children. His family remained central to his life, even as his coaching career took him across the country.

A Coaching Career That Made History

Gagliano began teaching English and coaching at Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey. Although he initially expected to coach football, the school’s lack of a football team led him toward track and field, where he would eventually make his mark.

In 1965, he coached Roselle Catholic athletes to victories in both the 4×800 meter relay and distance medley relay at the Penn Relays, helping establish the program as a major force in high school competition. The school later named its outdoor athletic complex the Frank Gagliano Athletic Complex in recognition of his contributions.

He joined Manhattan College in 1969 before moving to Rutgers University in 1974. He subsequently became head coach at Georgetown University, where his teams won numerous conference and relay championships.

Throughout his career, Gagliano coached 140 All Americans, more than 40 sub four minute milers, 15 Olympians and seven individual NCAA national champions. He was inducted into the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003.

Beyond collegiate competition, he worked with elite runners through the Reebok Enclave, Nike Farm Team and Oregon Track Club Elite. He continued coaching through the NJ NY Track Club, which he co founded in 2010.

Family, Funeral Arrangements and Legacy

Gagliano is survived by his wife of 65 years, Roberta, their four children, his sister Delores Lycett, and nine living grandchildren. His family also remembered his generosity, humor and devotion to his grandchildren.

A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. A funeral Mass will follow on Monday, November 2, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Summit.

The family has invited those wishing to honor his memory to consider donations to the track and field programs at Roselle Catholic, Manhattan University, Rutgers University or Georgetown University.

For the athletes he coached, Gagliano was more than a successful coach. He was a mentor whose influence extended beyond the track, shaping careers, character and lifelong relationships. His legacy will continue through the athletes and families who remember him.
