Longtime Georgia high school football coach Ray Lamb has died at the age of 90, marking the passing of one of the state’s most respected coaching figures.

Lamb, a Hall of Fame coach whose career spanned decades, died Thursday in Athens, according to a report from FootballScoop citing confirmation from his son, Hal Lamb. His death has prompted tributes from Georgia high school football programs and people who knew him throughout his long career.

Lamb became known for building successful football programs and helping develop generations of players and coaches. Over his high school coaching career, he compiled a 249-103-11 record, won 11 region championships and captured three state titles.

Ray Lamb Built a Lasting Coaching Legacy

Lamb’s most successful stretches came at Warren County and Commerce. He won consecutive state championships with Warren County in 1965 and 1966 before leading Commerce to its first state championship in 1981.

The 1981 championship was particularly meaningful for Lamb because both of his sons, Bobby and Hal, were part of the team. Commerce defeated Greene County 28-14, giving Lamb a state championship at a second school and placing him among a select group of Georgia coaches to accomplish that feat.

Lamb arrived at Commerce in 1967 and remained there for 22 seasons, helping turn the program into a consistent winner. A Georgia House resolution later recognized his accomplishments, including a 190-58 record during his Commerce tenure. The school eventually honored him by naming its home field Tiger Field at Ray Lamb Stadium.

He later finished his high school coaching career at Monroe Area in 1992.

His Influence Continued at Georgia

After leaving the sidelines, Lamb began another important chapter of his career with the University of Georgia football program. In 1993, he joined the Bulldogs as coordinator of high school relations, a position he held until 2011.

During those years, Lamb worked under coaches including Vince Dooley, Ray Goff, Jim Donnan and Mark Richt. His role connected Georgia high school programs with the university and kept him closely involved with coaches across the state.

Lamb was also a past president of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2006. He later entered the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2021.

His coaching influence extended into his own family. Sons Bobby and Hal became head coaches, while grandsons Taylor Lamb and Trey Lamb continued in the coaching profession.

Ray Lamb leaves behind a legacy measured not only by championships and wins, but also by the players, coaches and communities he influenced throughout Georgia football.
