Hawa Wague, who competed for the Bears from 2021 to 2022 has sadly passed away in a tragic accident.
Wague was a talented track and field athlete for the University of California, Berkeley, where she competes in multis and jumping events for the Golden Bears.
Originally from Sugar Land, Texas, and a graduate of Fort Bend Austin High School, Wague excelled both athletically and academically, majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology.
Throughout her collegiate career, she made her mark in high jump, with a personal best of 1.78 meters, ranking among Cal’s top performers and one of the best in the Pac-12 Conference.
Wague consistently placed in major competitions, finishing second at the Pac-12 Conference and earning top-five finishes at events such as the Mt. SAC Relays and Brutus Hamilton Invitational.
Before joining Cal, she was a standout multi-event athlete in Texas, earned medals at state championships and recorded strong heptathlon and pentathlon scores.
Beyond athletics, she was recognized for her academic excellence, community service, and leadership, having been part of the National and French National Honor Societies and volunteered for several charitable events.
Hawa Wague, A Shining Star On Track Died In A Tragic Car Accident
As per the reports, Hawa Wague, who capped off her collegiate athletic career with a silver medal in the high jump died in October 2025, in a tragic car accident in Houston, Texas.
The reason behind the accident has not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.
Cal Track/XC took to their official Instagram handle to announce the death of Hawa Wague. They wrote,
California track & field is devastated to learn of the passing of beloved teammate and friend Hawa Wague. “I’m heartbroken,” said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Robyne Johnson. “Hawa was such a bright light and had a beautiful personality, and I always looked forward to seeing her. She will be deeply missed.” Hawa competed for the Bears from 2021-22 and capped off her collegiate athletic career with a silver medal in the high jump at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships. We send our deepest condolences to all of Hawa’s loved ones.

An Instagram user named Dez took to the comment section and mourned the loss of Hawa. She wrote,

Track Athlete Hawa Wague Is Survived By Her Parents
Hawa Wague was born to her parents, Maimouna and Brahima Wague.
Although, Hawa and her parents live in the United State, they were originally from African country.
Therfore, they hold American-African ethnicity and American nationality.
Maimouna and Brahima are mourning the tragic loss of their daughter, Hawa Wague.
