Dabo Swinney, an American college football coach at Clemson University, has been married to his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Swinney.

The married couple has three children and resides in Clemson, South Carolina.

Swinney played several sports at Pelham High School and excelled in football.

He joined the Alabama Crimson Tide as a walk-on wide receiver in 1989 and was twice named an Academic All-SEC and SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll member.

Later, he served as a graduate assistant at Alabama under Gene Stallings and became a full-time assistant coach for the Crimson Tide, where he oversaw the wide receivers and tight ends.

Swinney became the wide receivers coach at Clemson in 2003 and excelled as the recruiting coordinator. After head coach Tommy Bowden resigned six games into the 2008 season, he was named the interim head football coach on October 13, 2008.

His team has won national championships in 2016 and 2018. The 2018 Clemson Tigers have often been considered one of the greatest college football teams of all time.

Kathleen Swinney: The High School Sweetheart Behind the Coach

Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney’s most outstanding teammate is his wife, Kathleen Bassett, also known as the First Lady of Clemson Football.

She has been his constant rock, supporting him through every high and low.

Swinney and Bassett’s story began in Alabama, where they attended the same elementary school.

However, their love truly blossomed at Pelham High School. Their journey started with a school dance in seventh grade, a memory so precious that Kathleen still has the photo from that night framed.

We always kind of liked each other, and when I was old enough to date in high school, we did.

Swinney was a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama, earning a very low salary, and Bassett was a schoolteacher. Life after college tested the young couple, and they often eat SpaghettiOs for dinner.

Despite their tight budget, a determined coach managed to save up to buy an engagement ring. His proposal was a surprise.

After tricking Bassett into a casual meeting, he took her to a fancy restaurant on August 19, 1993. Later, he dropped to one knee at the Denny Chimes as the bells rang at 10 p.m.

They married the following summer and have built a beautiful life together, raising three sons: Will, Drew, and Clay.

The married couple tries to be as normal as possible, despite their life not being entirely normal. Due to the busy schedule, Swinney isn’t home at 6 p.m. to sit down to dinner.

Kathleen Swinney is a Champion for Breast Cancer Awareness

Dabo Swinney’s wife, Kathleen Swinney, is a powerful force in the fight against breast cancer.

Her dedication is deeply personal, fueled by her own family’s experience and her proactive approach to health.

After her older sister, Lisa, passed away from breast cancer, Kathleen discovered she carries the BRCA gene, which significantly increases cancer risk.

She underwent a preventative double mastectomy, reducing her own risk to less than 1%.

After seeing my sister go through what she went through, I knew I wanted to have a mastectomy. Otherwise, I’d spend the rest of my life wondering when this cancer was going to come, so it was a no-brainer. I had three boys, and I knew I wanted to be there for them. I had several doctors who said they would tell their wives to have the prophylactic double mastectomy as well.

Afterward, Kathleen works tirelessly with Dabo’s All In Team Foundation to help others. Their foundation has raised millions through events like the annual Ladies Clinic and the “Tigers for Ta Tas” campaign.

This funding supports critical research and enables the deployment of mobile mammography buses, which provide free or low-cost screenings to women in their communities.

Kathleen’s message is to be proactive about your health. She encourages all women to schedule their mammograms, a simple step that can save lives.
