Freddie James, the legendary former head football coach at David W. Carter High School in Dallas, Texas, has died at the age of 89. His passing was confirmed Thursday by Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD), prompting tributes from former players, sports journalists, and members of the Texas football community.
James is being remembered for his lasting influence on high school football and the generations of young athletes he mentored throughout his coaching career.
Freddie James Built a Football Legacy at Carter High School
James spent approximately 25 years working at David W. Carter High School, where he became one of the most respected figures in Dallas high school sports. He served as the school’s head football coach from 1982 to 1995.
Before joining Dallas ISD, James played football at Prairie View A&M under legendary coach Billy Nicks. He began his coaching career at Spigner High School in Calvert before moving to Dallas in the late 1960s.
He initially worked at J.N. Ervin High School until it closed in 1971. He was subsequently transferred to Carter High School, where he helped build a nationally recognized football program.
James believed his responsibilities extended beyond the football field. He considered himself a father figure to his players and emphasized leadership, discipline, and personal development.
In a 2018 video produced by Dallas ISD, James described his approach to mentoring students, saying he did everything with a fatherly image.
Remembered for the Famous 1988 Carter Football Team
One of the most memorable chapters of James’ coaching career came in 1988, when Carter won the Texas state championship. The achievement was particularly significant because it marked the first Dallas ISD team to win a state title since 1950.
However, the University Interscholastic League stripped Carter of the championship in 1991 after determining that the team had used an academically ineligible player.
Despite the controversy, the 1988 team remains widely regarded as one of the greatest high school football teams in Texas history. According to reports, 26 players from the squad received Division I football scholarships. Former NFL All-Pro Jessie Armstead was among the players.
The team’s story also became nationally recognized through the bestselling book Friday Night Lights and the 2015 film Carter High, in which actor Charles Dutton portrayed James.
Freddie James’ Family and Legacy
James and his wife, Eva, shared nearly 55 years of marriage before she passed away in 2018.
After retiring from coaching, James continued serving his community by working as a school crossing guard in South Dallas.
His achievements included induction into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2002, and the Dallas ISD Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
His death marks the loss of an influential figure in Texas high school football. However, his legacy will continue through the players he coached, the students he supported, and the football community he helped shape.
