Edgewood Alum and Successful Holmes Head Football Coach Gary Malesky Passed Away, Leaving Behind His Beloved Wife of Over Six Decades, JoAnne!

Gary Brown Malesky, a respected high school football coach in San Antonio, Texas, passed away on September 9, 2025, at the age of 84.

He was known for his leadership at Kennedy and Holmes High School.

Holmes High School Remembered Gary Malesky With The Phrase, “Once a Husky, Always a Husky!”

Born on December 30, 1940, Gary Malesky was a standout figure in Texas high school football.

He began his athletic journey at Edgewood High School in San Antonio. Later, he played college ball at Ouachita Baptist in Arkansas, where he met his wife, JoAnne.

Regarding his coaching career, he started coaching at Kennedy High School in 1971 and led the team to two district championships.

Then he moved to Holmes High School in 1978, where he coached for ten years and helped the team reach the state semifinals twice, in 1980 and 1985.

He was known for teaching discipline and helping young athletes grow, both on and off the field.

In relation to his family, Gary was a proud father of two children with his wife of over six decades, JoAnne, whom he married in 1962.

His son David also became a football coach, continuing his father’s legacy.

David was a linebacker at Judson High School, helping the team win its first Class 5A state title in 1983.

Later, he played at Texas A&I, where he contributed to two Lone Star Conference championships.

On the contrary, Malesky’s other child has chosen to remain out of the public spotlight.

Gary Malesky’s passing left a void in the hearts of his family and the entire football community.

He is survived by his long-term partner, JoAnne, two children, and an extended family.

The Holmes Athletic Department and Football Team shared a heartfelt tribute, writing:

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Coach Gary Malesky, a legendary figure in San Antonio high school football and a proud part of Holmes Husky history…

The Holmes Athletic Department and Football Team send our heartfelt condolences to the Malesky family. Coach Malesky will always be a Husky, and his legacy will forever live on in the green and gold.

Gary Malesky’s funeral and celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Colonial Funeral Home.

Visitation is scheduled from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and the celebration of his life will take place from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
