Harvey Gene Schroeder, a longtime educator, artist, coach and community leader in Elk River, Minnesota, died on September 3, 2026, at the age of 88. His death came just two weeks after he celebrated his final birthday with family.
Schroeder was remembered as an energetic and creative person whose interests included art, teaching, football, theater, music, chess, bridge and racquetball. His career and community involvement left a lasting impression on generations of students and residents in Elk River.
A Long Career in Education and the Arts
After graduating from St. Olaf College, where he participated in football and theater, Schroeder arrived in Elk River in 1961 as a student teacher. He went on to spend 36 years in District 728 before retiring.
During his career, he helped establish an award winning junior high art program that was recognized by the Minnesota Department of Education. He also coached varsity football, started the Elk River girls’ track team and served as an assistant principal.
His work with art continued beyond the classroom. Schroeder taught adult art through the Community Education Program and later operated his own studio. He founded the Studio Art Guild and held several one-man art shows.
Schroeder also remained active in theater and community activities. He wrote, produced and directed local plays and was known for bringing people together through gatherings and celebrations.
Remembered by Family, Students and Friends
Those who knew Schroeder remembered his enthusiasm for life and his commitment to encouraging others. He loved nature, animals and children and taught his own children values including honesty, fairness, persistence and authenticity.
A former student wrote about Schroeder in a 2016 tribute, recalling his grace, wisdom, humor and dedication to fellow artists and students. The tribute described the lasting influence he had on people who spent time learning in his studio.
Schroeder is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sharon Tracy; his daughter and son in law, Sondra and Steve Schroeder Davis; his son and daughter in law, Ian Schroeder and Kim Ring; stepchildren Shawn Tracy and wife Nancy, and Erin and husband Bob Duncan; grandchildren and extended family members; along with many friends, former students and art admirers.
His family also expressed appreciation for the staff at Guardian Angels care facility for their care and support during his final months.
Schroeder wanted a party rather than a funeral. His family said the date and location of a memorial gathering will be announced later.
