Some reports suggest that Rich and Mary Lewis, Steve’s best friend, were fully aware of his struggles during the final year of his life.
In January, the couple joined Steve and his wife, Terri, on a vacation to Hawaii.
Rich Lewis shared:
I’ve known Steve since his high school days, Although I’m five years older, we became close friends over the years. We spent time playing softball, hunting, and cycling together. We even stood as groomsmen at each other’s weddings.
Similarly, Mary Lewis fondly recollected memories about the time she spent on vacation with Steve and His wife, saying:
On the trip he was forgetting things and he had decided not to take his medication,He still thought he worked at Hononegah and was worried about getting back. When we did return we still met him a few times a week, but his condition really deteriorated quickly. He had a very aggressive form (of dementia) and they say when it hits you younger it can be much faster. It did come so fast.
Steve was a respected individual known for his leadership and dedication. His passing deeply affected those who knew him.
Tributes have been flooding in across social media platforms, highlighting his contribution and commitment to sports and education.
One of his friends recalled the good times shared with Steve, saying:
Such a very very sad loss, we had a fun time Steve and Terri in Maui in January. Sure will miss him so much
