Jeff Thorne, a celebrated American football coach and former quarterback, passed away on December 9, 2025, at the age of 53 after a courageous battle with stomach cancer.
He was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer in February 2025.
After this, his family members launched a GOFundMe fundraiser to help support his treatment and the financial challenges that came with his battle.
In November 2025, his family shared that he had completed a full course of treatment at Hope4Cancer and returned home to continue his healing journey.
Likewise, Jeff was prepared to return to Hope4Cancer in early February 2026 for a three‑month follow‑up after completing his initial treatment there.
Sadly, despite his strength and the hope he carried after treatment, Jeff Thorne passed away.

Jeff Thorne’s Wife Was A Steady Support Throughout His Career Journey And Later During His Battle With Cancer!
Jeff Thorne was married to Joanna Thorne, a devoted supporter, wife, and mother.
Together, they raised their family, including their son Payton Thorne, who followed in his father’s footsteps in football, and two daughters.
Joannna graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Eastern Illinois University.
She has a professional background that spans more than 20 years in auditing, general accounting, tax preparation, and bookkeeping.
Previously, she served as a Senior Accounting Manager at Lee Mandel & Associates, Inc., where she gained extensive experience in managing financial operations.
In addition to her corporate work, she also runs Thorne & Company Accounting Services LLC, a firm that provides consulting support to small businesses.
Currently, she works as an Accounting Manager at DHJJ Certified Public Accountants and Business Advisors.
Alongside her work, she has been a pillar of support for Jeff’s coaching career and Payton’s football journey.
She was always by her husband Jeff’s side, both during his long and successful coaching career and later through his battle with stage 4 stomach cancer.
Her role extended beyond Jeff’s career and illness; she also nurtured son Payton Thorne’s journey as a quarterback.
Regarding their son, Payton, he was born on June 26, 2001, in Naperville, Illinois.
He played as a quarterback first at Michigan State, and later transferred to Auburn University, where he continued to build his career.
He is currently a professional football quarterback with the Cincinnati Bengals, having signed as an undrafted free agent in 2025.
Payton often spoke about his father’s influence, crediting Jeff’s guidance and example both on and off the field.
His father coached him through his formative years.
After the recent demise of Jeff Thorne, his wife Joanna, their son Payton, and their two daughters have been mourning his loss.
While the football community and friends have surrounded them with love and support, the family has chosen to grieve quietly.
