Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Suzie McConnell-Serio and Pete Serio have been married for 36 years.

Suzie McConnell-Serio is a known name in the world of basketball; however, behind her coveted career is her husband, Pete Serio, whose own contributions to basketball and their shared life have been integral to their family’s legacy.

Both attended Seton-La Salle Catholic High School, where Suzie started on the 1984 PIAA state championship basketball team.

While specific details of their first meeting aren’t known, their shared roots in Brookline and Seton-La Salle suggest they crossed paths during their high school years.

Suzie and Pete began dating after high school, as she pursued her playing career at Penn State (1984–88), where she set NCAA records for assists.

Eventually, the couple walked down the aisle on April 23, 1989, shortly after Suzie’s gold medal win at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Suzie and Pete settled in Upper St. Clair, raising four children while both pursued coaching. Not to forget, all four of their kids played basketball.

Their eldest son, Peter Serio, played basketball at Upper St. Clair High School and later at the collegiate level.

Suzie McConnell-Serio Succeeded Her Husband, Pete Serio, As The Head Coach Of The Upper St. Clair Girls’ Basketball Team!

Pete Serio has been a prominent figure in Pittsburgh’s high school basketball scene, notably as the head coach of the Upper St. Clair High School girls’ basketball team until his retirement after the 2024–25 season.

His tenure at Upper St. Clair was marked by success, building a competitive program in one of Pennsylvania’s toughest districts.

Before Upper St. Clair, Pete coached at other local schools, including Chartiers Valley High School, where he led the boys’ team in the early 1990s.

His coaching philosophy emphasized discipline and fundamentals, traits that complemented Suzie’s own approach.

After retiring, Pete passed the coaching baton to his wife Suzie at Upper St. Clair, a transition that highlighted their shared commitment to the sport.

Beyond coaching, Pete has been involved in youth basketball, mentoring young athletes in the Pittsburgh area.

His career, although less publicized than Suzie’s, speaks volumes about a deep dedication to developing talent.
