Heather McPhee, an associate general counsel for the NFLPA, is a down-to-earth daughter who grew up with supportive parents in Natick, Massachusetts.

Her parents played a subtle but powerful role in shaping her career as a legal advocate within the NFL Players Association.

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) is facing yet another controversy as associate general counsel Heather McPhee has been placed on paid administrative leave following multiple employee complaints against her.

McPhee, who has worked for the NFLPA since 2009, is accused of failing to follow supervisors’ directions, bullying colleagues, and disrupting the union’s work environment.

The decision to place her on leave comes just months after her allegations helped trigger an FBI investigation into the NFLPA, the MLBPA, and their joint licensing venture, OneTeam Partners.

Previously, she raised concerns about a controversial compensation plan proposed by the NFLPA’s eight-member board of directors, which included former executive director Lloyd Howell.

She allegedly wrote memos warning that the plan could expose the NFLPA to legal jeopardy and urged an investigation into claims that board members had allocated equity shares to themselves.

Despite her role in exposing the OneTeam controversy, McPhee has not been designated as a whistleblower, leaving her with fewer legal protections.

Meanwhile, Matt Curtin, head of the NFLPA’s licensing arm and a OneTeam board member, is among those who filed complaints against her.

Heather McPhee’s Parents Are The Foundation of a Fearless Advocate

Heather McPhee, the NFLPA attorney known for her tenacity in high-stakes legal battles, is a down-to-earth daughter of a baseball coach and a teacher.

She credits her strong moral compass and work ethic to her parents, Sharon McPhee and Neil McPhee.

Mary Hollander Munson, a friend of Sharon, introduced her to Neil 60 years ago.

Sharon McPhee and Neil McPhee married on February 11, 1967, and have three children. Sharon calls Neil a cute baseball player.

Their influence is evident in Heather’s career, where she has fought for fairness, whether representing players like Ray Rice or exposing financial misconduct within the NFLPA.

Sharon, a retired educator, taught english at Natick High School and Saint Sebastian’s School. She likely instilled in McPhee the value of knowledge, discipline, and clear communication while growing up.

Those skills serve her well in negotiating complex legal disputes.

Meanwhile, Neil’s coaching background may have shaped her strategic thinking and resilience under pressure.

Her parents’ professions demand patience, leadership, and a commitment to doing what’s right, qualities that define McPhee’s approach to advocacy.

Nonetheless, McPhee is proud of her roots and embodies the lessons of her upbringing.

Her parents’ emphasis on integrity and hard work continues to drive her as she challenges power structures in sports law. She proves that the values taught at home can fuel a career of extraordinary impact.
