Herrin, IL: Legendary Football Coach Paul Restivo Dies at 91

Paul Restivo, whose decades on the sideline transformed high school football across southern Illinois, died September 10, 2026, in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 91.

Restivo was born at home in Freeman Spur, Illinois, a small coal mining town, to Italian immigrant parents Mary and Sam Restivo.

The youngest of three children, he grew up without much money but with a deep commitment to family and community that would shape the rest of his life.

From Player to Coaching Legend

A standout athlete at Herrin High School, Restivo earned a football scholarship to Memphis State. An injury sent him back home, where he transferred to Southern Illinois University and lettered for two years while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

His coaching career began at age 23 at DuQuoin, where his very first practice drew only four players. Local boys could make more money working the DuQuoin State Fair than they’d earn playing for him that season. Rather than fight it, Restivo negotiated with fair organizers so his athletes could do both, an early lesson in building partnerships that would define his approach for the next fifty years.

He went on to rebuild the Lawrenceville High School program in 1963, guiding the squad known as “Restivo’s Runts” to a 33-12-4 record. He also convinced the school board to open the gym and track to the wider community, an idea suggested by local Catholic nuns.

Building a Program and a Community

Restivo returned to Herrin in 1969, and it’s there that his legacy took full shape. After a rough two win season that year, the Tigers launched into an extraordinary stretch that included a 27 game winning streak, two undefeated seasons and multiple conference titles.

He didn’t just coach players. He built institutions. He started a Mothers Club so parents could better understand the game and support their sons, formed a Booster Club, launched Pop Warner touch football and ran a Saturday Quarterback Club where local business owners rallied behind the team. Those efforts helped fund upgrades to Palmer Field, including a new press box.

His honors piled up over the years: multiple Coach of the Year awards, induction into the Illinois Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Southern Illinois Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Herrin High School Hall of Fame and the Lawrenceville Sports Hall of Fame. He also spent 18 years as Herrin’s athletic director and taught history, health and driver’s education, and was named Herrin Fest Grand Marshal in 2012.

Those who knew him say what mattered most to Restivo wasn’t the wins, but the young men he helped shape along the way.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Dixie, along with five children, ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a wide extended family. He was preceded in death by his son Michael, his parents, his siblings and a grandson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Herrin Elks Lodge on November 28. The family has asked that memorial donations be directed to the Herrin Tiger Football Alumni Association scholarship fund.
