I.C. Norcom High School Senior Alaila Everett Calls Baton Hit an Accident Amid Championship Drama “It Was an Accident”

Baton attacker Alaila Everett broke her silence after injuring her opponent, Kaelen Tucker, tearfully claiming it as an accident.

Over the weekend, a 9-second video went viral that appeared to be a violent attack during a relay race as an I.C. Norcom High School senior, Alaila Everett, struck Kaelen Tucker, a Brookville High School junior, on the head with a baton.

The incident occurred on March 4, 2025, during the 4×200 meter relay at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 3 State Indoor Championships at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

The moment, captured on video, quickly went viral. In nearly no time, the two students, Alaila Everett and Kaelen Tucker, were thrown into the national spotlight.

The race began like any other competitive relay, with Alaila Everett and Kaelen Tucker running for position around a curve on the track.

Brookville High School junior Tucker, running the second leg for Brookville, attempted to pass Everett on the outside.

As the two athletes ran closely together, Everett’s baton made contact with Tucker’s head, causing her to stumble and fall off the track. She instantly clutched her head in pain.

Medical staff rushed to Tucker’s side and later diagnosed her with a concussion and a possible skull fracture.

Meanwhile, Everett continued running, and her I.C. Norcom relay team was ultimately disqualified for “contact interference,” a ruling upheld by the VHSL as “appropriate and correct.”

Following the viral video, Everett got several accusations of intentional assault, racial slurs, and even death threats.

Kaelen Tucker’s mother, Tamarro, expressed her frustration over the incident, saying,

No apologies. No coaches. No athlete. No anything. Even if it was an accident, which I don’t believe it was… nothing.

While Kaelen, who was still reeling from the incident, asked, “Why did you do it, and why haven’t you apologized?

However, recently, the apparent attacker, Alaila Everett, has broken her silence and is claiming that it was an accident. Now, Everett is tearfully pleading for understanding.

I.C. Norcom High School Senior Alaila Everett Tearly Broke Her Silence, Offering Her Side of the Story!

Meanwhile, in an emotional interview with WAVY TV 10 on March 10, 2025, Everett offered her side of the story and claimed the hit was unintentional. She said,

After a couple times of hitting her, my baton got stuck behind her back like this, and it rolled up her back.

I lost my balance, and when I pumped my arms again, she got hit.

Breaking down in tears, Everett further added, “I know my intentions, and I would never hit someone on purpose.

She then argued that the viral video was filmed from a single angle, misrepresenting the chaotic moment.

It’s like they’re going off of one angle. They’re assuming my character, calling me ghetto and racial slurs, death threats; all of this off of a nine-second video.

Everett’s parents also came forward to her defense. Her mother, Zeketa Cost, told WAVY, “I didn’t have to see a first video, second video, or tenth video. I know 100 percent that she would never do that to nobody.

Likewise, her father, Genoa Everett, said, “It doesn’t seem right that this would happen, and now we have to go to a city three hours away that everyone hates our guts already.

The incident has divided opinions, and Vincent Pugh, former Citywide Athletic Director at Portsmouth Public Schools, suggested Tucker may have cut in too soon, saying,

If a person comes up on the outside, they got to be a full stride ahead of me before they can cut in front of me.

However, Tucker’s family and others remain unconvinced by Everett’s explanation.

Alaila Everett claims she attempted to reach out to Tucker via social media to apologize but was blocked.

Everybody has feelings,” she said. “You’re physically hurt, but you’re not thinking of my mental.

Meanwhile, as the VHSL continues its investigation, the controversy shows no signs of fading.
