Joseph ‘Joe’ Curiel, a longtime football coach and former athlete, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, leaving his family, friends, and students devastated.

While the actual cause of the untimely death of legendary Santa Ana’s coach, Joe Curiel, is not yet available, according to some social media reports, he was hospitalized a few days back.

According to a family member, Joe was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital on Friday, where he flatlined and became unresponsive.

Joe Curiel was an exceptional football coach who served as the head coach of several high schools in Santa Ana, leading his team to several victories.

He coached the Santa Ana Redskins during the 1970s. Joe Curiel continued his coaching career for over three decades.

He also served as the head football coach of Century High School and was regarded as one of the legendary coaches in the Santa Ana area.

The untimely death of Joe Curiel has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones.

Social Media is Filled With Heartfelt Tributes To Late Coach Joe Curiel

Many of Joe Curiel’s friends and loved ones are recalling his memories and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

One of his players from Century, where Joe served as the linemen coach, stated that he first met him while playing for the Santa Ana Seminoles, while Joe served as the head coach of the Santa Ana Redskins.

He further added that Coach Joe was an interesting and loving man who always cared for his players as his own sons.

Another player from Century High School expressed his respect for the late Joe Curiel, recalling the time when Joe helped pay for the player’s insurance so he could play football.

“Coach Joe you will be missed. I remember back in 2003 my Junior season at Century he helped pay for my insurance so I could play football. I will never forget that. He always had my back in High School. One of the reasons why I coach football now. RIP Coach Joe.”

Joe Curiel’s old friend Ralph Flores took to his Facebook to pay tribute to him and wrote:

“His heart was truly in the giving to his kids. To some he was a father, a coach and a friend. Joe your generosity has left a lasting impression on many of the kids to this day. To this day when they see you they call you coach. You were truly given something special to share with those who needed it. I am honored and privileged in having you as a friend. You now are home under the care of our Lord and Savior. May you Rest in Heavenly Peace. I celebrate you today and will never forget you. This one is for you my friend.”
