Michael Jay Burton, a three time Olympic gold medalist and accomplished swimmer and coach, died peacefully on September 18, 2026, in Loveland, Colorado. He was 79.

According to his obituary, Burton had been battling Lewy body dementia. His family remembered him for his strength, determination, humor and competitive spirit, as well as for the many interests he enjoyed away from swimming.

Burton was born July 3, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Edward and Bernice Burton. His family moved to California when he was one year old, and he grew up in the Sacramento area.

His path toward competitive swimming began after a bicycle accident left him unable to continue participating in contact sports. At 14, he entered his first competitive swimming race. His talent and work ethic quickly became apparent, and he eventually earned the nickname “Iron Mike.”

Michael Burton’s Olympic Swimming Career

Before graduating from El Camino High School in 1965, Burton had already won 10 AAU swimming titles along with other honors.

He attended UCLA, where he won five NCAA individual championships. His success continued on the international stage, where he became one of the most accomplished swimmers of his generation.

Burton won two gold medals at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games in the 1,500 meter freestyle and 400 meter freestyle. Four years later, at the 1972 Munich Olympics, he won another gold medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle.

His performance in Munich was particularly notable. Burton set a world record of 15 minutes and 52.58 seconds in the event and later carried the United States flag during the closing ceremony.

He became the first man to win the Olympic 1,500 meter freestyle at two consecutive Olympic Games. During his competitive career, he also established seven world records and 16 American records.

His achievements eventually led to induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an Honor Swimmer. He was also inducted into the UCLA and Sacramento Sports Halls of Fame.

Life After Competition and Family

After retiring from competitive swimming, Burton continued contributing to the sport through coaching. He coached teams in Des Moines and other parts of the country and helped Brigham Young University win its first swimming conference championship.

His coaching style was demanding, but many swimmers respected him for challenging them to reach their potential.

Outside swimming, Burton enjoyed cooking, reading, camping and attending antique car shows. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife of 39 years, Carol, who remained by his side until his death.

The family remembered several special trips, including a European journey with his siblings and a road trip through California with Carol and his grandsons.

Burton is survived by Carol, his sister Barbara Davis, brother Randall Burton, children Eric Burton and Loni Vander Kooi, four stepchildren, extended family members and six grandchildren.

Celebrations of life are being planned in Colorado, Montana, California and Iowa, with details to be announced.

The family has requested memorial contributions to the USA Swimming Foundation in Burton’s honor, supporting learn to swim programs across the United States.
