Family and loved ones mourn the loss of beloved Elkton, Maryland, resident and longtime coach Kevin Patrick McGroerty, who passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the age of 71.
While his family has not disclosed the cause of his death, many of his loved ones are recalling the memories of Kevin Patrick McGroerty and paying tribute to him.
Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on June 14, 1954, to late parents, Harry J. and Phyllis Murray McGroerty, Kevin touched the lives of many with his amazing journey as a coach and technician.
Kevin McGroerty served as a multi-sports coach at MOT Charter School and led his team in several victories.
He was the assistant varsity softball and basketball coach, as well as the head junior varsity basketball coach.
MOT Charter School took to its official social media to express its sorrow and pay tribute to its beloved coach, Kevin McGroerty.

“Coach K was a cherished member of our Mustang family whose energy, encouragement, and unwavering support shaped the lives of countless student-athletes. Over the years, he coached softball, women’s basketball, and men’s basketball, while also lending his time and heart to many other sports programs. Whether on the court, on the field, or in the stands, Coach K was a constant presence, always cheering, guiding, and supporting our students and staff.

Beyond the wins and losses, his true legacy lives in the confidence he helped build, the character he modeled, and the community he strengthened through his kindness and dedication. He was a mentor, a motivator, and a friend to so many.”
Kevin was also a proud member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, where he officiated several games fairly.
In addition to his coaching career, Kevin McGroerty served as a lead technician at Northrop Grumman for years and was a passionate outdoorsman.
He was a longtime member of the Upper Chesapeake Bass Masters.
Kevin Patrick McGroerty Was Preceded in Death By His Parents, Wife, and Son
Kevin Patrick McGroerty was not just a great coach but also a devoted husband to his longtime wife, Sheila J. Bower McGroerty, who preceded him in death.
The couple were happily married for 32 years until Sheila’s demise.
Kevin’s wife, Sheila Jean McGroerty, passed away on December 31, 2017, at the age of 71.
Born on November 12, 1946, in War, WV, to late parents, Buford and Helen Merrey Bryant, Sheila served as a welder with Delpro for decades and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
In addition to his wife, Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, son Joey Bower, niece, Melissa McGroerty Fisher.
Furthermore, Kevin Patrick McGroerty is survived by his son, Daniel McGroerty, grandsons, Hunter Bower and Gene Plank, siblings, Michael McGroerty (Karen), Sharon Hight (John), Cape May, Thomas McGroerty (Elaine), Mary McDonald (Matthew), Harry McGroerty, Phyllis Hennessy (John), Helen Wright (Robert), John McGroerty (Jenna), and Jeanette Hildwine, nieces and nephews, and the entire family.
Kevin Patrick McGroerty’s contribution to the Elkton community will always be remembered and cherished by his family, friends, and loved ones.

- The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Church, 454 Bow Street, Elkton, Maryland, with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM in the Church Chapel.
- Interment will be in Gilpin Manor Memorial Park, Elkton, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The B+ Foundation, 101 Rockland Circle, Wilmington, DE.
