Recently, an online incident has sparked outrage throughout the Peoria area while celebrating a moment for high school cross country athletes.

During a recent Cross Country Championship, a post showcasing competitors turned sour after a Brimfield mother, identified on Instagram as @schmidgalls, started making derogatory remarks about a minor athlete’s appearance and participation.

The controversy erupted on Instagram after the account illinoisrunnews shared photos from the championship, encouraging followers to vote for their performers of the week.

What was meant to spotlight student athletes’ dedication and hard work quickly drew unwanted attention when @schmidgalls posted a comment questioning why one of the competitors “looked like a boy” in what she believed was a girls’ group.

She wrote,

“Why do you have a boy in this group? Shouldn’t it only be girls?”

Another user, @3lyat, responded, pointing out that the group was evenly split between four male and four female athletes.

But @schmidgalls doubled down, insisting that a boy was competing in a girls’ sport and questioning why others were okay with it.

The exchange grew increasingly tense. @3lyat added,

“Not sure what your problem is,” “However, why is it okay to harass a minor?”

Despite repeated attempts to explain the situation, @schmidgalls persisted with comments about “a boy acting like a girl,” insisting she was “stating facts.”

After warning from other commenters to stop harassing a child, she eventually backtracked, writing,

“I am sorry, I don’t know what I am doing wrong.”

The incident didn’t stay contained to Instagram. Peoria community member David Demyanov shared the screenshots to the local Facebook group Peoria, IL community and Happenings, and captioned,

Hi all, I’m sorry that I have to post this. I’m hoping someone can give this the attention it needs.
On a Cross Country Championship Instagram post, a mother from Brimfield decided to publicly harass a minor online because of her “masculine” appearance. Instead of celebrating the athletes’ hard work, she’s targeting a child with inappropriate comments. No child deserves to be harassed by adults online. This is unacceptable behavior. Here’s the conversation that took place:

The post quickly drew attention, with many community members criticizing the actions as harmful and embarrassing for the local school district.

Advocates say this incident underscores the need for stronger accountability when adults cross the line into harassment.

As of now, it is unclear whether Brimfield school officials or local athletic associations will respond formally to the incident.
