Scandals

The Year 2016

In 2016, Lochte fell into the abyss of controversy after he and his other American swimmers claimed that armed men with police badges robbed them.

It was when they were in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 2016 Summer Olympics. According to international news, those armed men weren’t the police but the security guards.

As per the report, the swimmers urinated outside the washroom in the gas station. They also vandalized a framed poster and gave money to the guards. Ultimately, the press released the news about the swimmers.

Hence, they had to pay a fine of approximately $10,800 to a Brazilian charity to get back their passport.

After this incident, both the US Olympic Committee and USA Swimming concluded to suspend Ryan for ten months, and he was made to forfeit $100,000 in bonus money. Likewise, Bentz, Conger, and Feigen were also suspended for four months.

Additionally, Ryan was restricted from attending the USA Swimming’s year-end Golden Goggles celebration. Only in July 2017 the Brazilian court dismissed his charges.

The Year 2018

In June 2018, the US Anti-Doping Agency suspended Lochte for 14 months for taking a “prohibited intravenous infusion.”

According to the reports, he had posted an Instagram post with the hashtag #ivdrip.
