Matt Smith, longtime Saint Mark’s High School baseball coach and athletic director, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the untimely age of 57, leaving his family, friends, and loved ones behind.
According to reports, the untimely death of beloved longtime Delaware coach Matt Smith came after his long and courageous battle with cancer.
Matt Smith was battling with colon cancer. According to his wife Amy’s social media post of 2022, Matt underwent two surgeries and eight chemo treatments.
Furthermore, the untimely death of Matt Smith has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones.
Many of his loved ones are paying tribute to the late Matt Smith and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.
Saint Mark’s High School took to its official social media to pay tribute to its longtime coach and athletic director and wrote:

His impact cannot be measured in wins or titles, though he earned many, but in the confidence of a student who felt seen, the perseverance of an athlete who kept going, and the strength of a community that follows his example of faith, kindness, and loyalty.”

The late Matt Smith began his athletic journey from a very young age, playing baseball at Saint Elizabeth’s High School and later at Ursinus College.
Furthermore, he devoted nearly three decades to shaping student-athletes at Saint Mark’s High School.
Joining the school in 1992 as a teacher and coach, Smith quickly rose through the ranks, coaching freshman and junior varsity teams before becoming head baseball coach in 1998.
Under his leadership, the Spartans captured 10 state championships between 1999 and 2016, amassing 383 career wins.
Nine of his players were drafted into Major League Baseball, with one competing in the Phillies’ minor league system.
In 2011, Smith was named Athletic Director, overseeing all sports programs while mentoring generations of students through his coaching, Spartan Summer Camps, and work with the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA).
Similarly, Smith’s career earned him numerous accolades, including being named Delaware’s Greatest High School Baseball Coach by MaxPreps in 2021 and induction into the Delaware Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025.

Matt Smith is survived by his wife of 25 years, Amy Trees Smith; his daughter, Olivia Smith; his son, Ryan Smith; and his entire family.
