Donald “Coach” H. Kollath, a longtime coach, educator and mentor in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, died Saturday, September 26, 2026, at his home surrounded by his wife and family. He was 90.
According to the obituary published by Ballhorn Chapels Funeral & Cremation Care Center, Kollath was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, and built a life centered around athletics, education and helping young people.
A Life Dedicated to Coaching and Youth
Kollath graduated from Appleton Senior High School before earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.
During his college years, he was a standout athlete in basketball, track and football. His accomplishments earned him recognition on the university’s Wall of Fame.
He later served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1958 to 1960 at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
Kollath became widely known in the Sheboygan community through his work as a coach and educator. His obituary describes him as a well rounded athlete and coach who took great pride in guiding young people for more than five decades.
He was the founder of Sheboygan Youth Football and Lake Country Academy. He also served as head coach of the Sheboygan County Redwings semi professional football team.
For many people in the community, his influence extended beyond the playing field. His work with youth became an important part of his life and legacy.
Family, Travel and Memorial Service
Kollath married Monica Francis on September 26, 1992, at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Sheboygan. The couple enjoyed traveling together during their 34 years of marriage and visited all 50 states.
He is survived by his wife, Monica; children Kathleen Hellenbrand and Kent Kollath; grandchildren Katelyn Kollath and Kody Hellenbrand; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Martha Kollath; his first wife, Mary Ellen Ryan of Wisconsin Dells; and his siblings Elaine Kollath, Phyllis Bruex, Merlen Kollath, Marlow Kollath and Harland Kollath.
A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, at 4 p.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church, 818 Huron Avenue in Sheboygan. Father Nick Baumgardner will officiate. Family members will receive visitors at the church from 2 p.m. until the start of the service.
The family has requested that people wishing to honor Kollath’s memory consider memorial contributions to Sheboygan Youth Football instead of flowers.
The family also expressed appreciation to the staff at Aurora Medical for their care.
