Coach Robbie Lucas, who led Somerset High School’s football team to its first Class 2A state championship in 2019, is remembered for his dedication to his players, his love for his family, and the lasting relationships he built throughout his coaching career.
Lucas, 50, of Stanford, Kentucky, died at his home on Sunday, November 13, 2022. Born on October 7, 1972, in Garrard County, he was the son of Charlie and Ruth Lucas.
His obituary described him as a genuine, honest, and straightforward person who was loved by many. Beyond football, Lucas was a devoted husband and father who cherished spending time with his family, especially his two daughters.
Coach Robbie Lucas Led Somerset to a Historic Championship
Lucas spent more than two decades involved with the Somerset High School football program, including 14 years as its head coach. During that time, he became a respected figure in the Somerset Briar Jumpers community.
One of the defining moments of his coaching career came in 2019, when he guided Somerset to the only Class 2A state championship in the program’s history, according to his obituary.
However, his influence extended beyond victories and championships. Lucas believed in the importance of loyalty, teamwork, and looking after one another. His familiar message, “Long Live the Brotherhood,” reflected the values he wanted his players to carry with them both on and off the football field.
He cared deeply for the athletes he coached and considered them all his boys. For Lucas, coaching was about more than preparing a team for Friday night games. It was also about building relationships and encouraging players to support one another.
That commitment became an important part of his legacy within the Somerset football program.
Outside coaching, Lucas enjoyed hunting, particularly turkey hunting. He was also a passionate sports fan who followed the Kentucky Wildcats and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Family and Loved Ones Remember His Life and Legacy
Lucas is survived by his wife, Nicole Lucas, and their daughters, Madalyn and Mollie. His parents, Charlie and Ruth Lucas of Stanford, also survive him, along with his grandmother, Helen Durbin.
His extended family includes his brother, Eugene Lucas, of Houston, Texas, and his sister, Jennifer Lucas, of Nicholasville, Kentucky. He also leaves behind six nieces and nephews, two godchildren, and other relatives who were part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Charles W. and Marie Berry Lucas, his maternal grandfather, Charles B. Durbin, two great aunts, Dorothy Rhodus and Lena Rhodus, and his father in law, William “Bill” Drake Jr.
Visitation was scheduled for November 20, 2022, at Grace Fellowship Church in Stanford, followed by a second visitation and funeral service on November 21. The service was officiated by Bro. Johnny Thompson and Bro. Ryan Tucker.
Although Lucas died in 2022, his championship achievement and the brotherhood he encouraged remain important parts of his story. His legacy is remembered through his family, former players, and the football community he served for many years.
