Harold R. “Randy” Smith, a longtime teacher, coach, husband, father and grandfather from South Point, Ohio, died peacefully on September 15, 2026. He was 71.

His obituary was published by Wallace Family Funeral Home on September 17. Smith was remembered by his family, former students, athletes and friends as a person who devoted much of his life to education, athletics and helping young people.

A Life Dedicated to Students and Athletes

Smith was born on April 2, 1955, to Russell and Evelene Smith of South Point. He was one of 11 children and grew up with a strong connection to family and his community.

A 1973 graduate of South Point High School, Smith earned a football scholarship to Glenville State College, where he studied education. After college, he returned to his hometown and began teaching and coaching at his alma mater. He later earned a master’s degree in special education from Marshall University.

Smith spent most of his nearly 50 year career at South Point High School. He also worked with students and athletes at Green Local Schools and, most recently, Portsmouth West.

Although he coached several sports, track and field was especially important to him. His obituary describes the many athletes he guided over the years and the lessons he taught them about perseverance, confidence, compassion, accountability and believing in themselves.

Smith often lived by the simple phrase, “Love your kids.” His family said he put those words into practice by helping students and families in need and making people around him feel valued.

Family, Legacy and a Lasting Tribute

Smith was married to his high school sweetheart, Kathy Cooke Smith, for 51 years. They shared a life together centered around family, education and community.

He is survived by his three children, Jessica Luhrsen, Ayrie Staley and Jaad Smith, along with eight grandchildren. He is also survived by several siblings, extended family members, friends, former students, teachers and athletes who became an important part of his life.

His family described his grandchildren as one of his greatest sources of joy. Known as “Papaw Randy,” he was remembered as a storyteller, supporter and enthusiastic cheerleader who encouraged each grandchild to pursue their dreams.

Smith also enjoyed traveling during school breaks, visiting countries around the world. New Zealand held a particularly special place in his heart. He also loved music and attended concerts across different genres.

Recently, the track at South Point High School was named in Smith’s honor. His family also established the Coach Randy Smith “Kia Kaha” Scholarship Fund through the Scioto Foundation. The annual scholarship will support a student athlete from South Point High School or Green High School who participated in track and field and demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity.

The phrase “Kia Kaha,” meaning “stay strong” in Maori, reflects a message Smith shared with generations of young people.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. Wallace Family Funeral Home in South Point is assisting the family with arrangements.

Smith’s legacy continues through the students he taught, athletes he coached and people he encouraged throughout his nearly five decades of service.
