Shamar “Smooth” Smith, a former St. James senior quarterback, passed away following a motorcycle accident on June 7, 2025.

He was a standout student-athlete who often credits his success to his coaches, teammates, and parents. He was a leader, a role model, and an inspiration to his teammates, coaches, and community.

After graduating from St. James High School, he joined Nicholls State University.

Smooth left an indelible mark on Louisiana football with his talent, humility, and unwavering determination.

His legacy was cemented in 2019 when he led St. James to a perfect 15-0 season and their first state championship in 40 years.

His performance in the title game earned him MVP honors, which solidified his place among Louisiana’s elite high school players.

Despite offers from Colorado, Colorado State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Tulane, South Alabama, Southern Miss, and Houston, he initially committed to Texas-San Antonio.

We went into each game like we were the underdogs. We were built for this after the schedule we had. I tip my hat off to Coach Valdez for giving us a tough schedule. It really pays off in the playoffs.
