A St. Johns County parent is demanding immediate action after her 10-year-old son was brutally assaulted during his ride home from Wards Creek Elementary School.

The attack, which occurred on a Thursday afternoon, has prompted widespread community outrage and calls for stronger measures to protect students on school transportation.

Ashleigh Sargent, the victim’s mother, said the assault was unprovoked.

According to her account, another student struck her son twice in the back of the head during the bus ride.

The violent incident was captured on the bus’s security camera, confirming the severity of the attack.

Emergency services, including 911 dispatchers, EMS, and sheriff’s deputies, responded to the scene.

A formal police report has been filed, and Sargent is pursuing both administrative and legal channels to ensure the responsible parties are held accountable.

Another student struck him twice in the head from behind, an unprovoked attack that was captured on bus video footage,” Sargent stated.

“This student has reportedly been involved in previous incidents with other victims. Despite numerous complaints, the student was permitted to return to school and the same bus route the next day while my son stayed home, traumatized.”

The attack not only left her son injured but also caused emotional distress to several younger children who witnessed the assault.

Sargent publicly extended an apology to those families and expressed gratitude to neighbors and friends who have supported her son during recovery.

I urge district leadership and law enforcement to take swift and meaningful action to protect our students and prevent further harm,” she added.

The incident has ignited strong reactions across the community. Parents, educators, and residents flooded social media with messages of support, frustration, and calls for stronger safety measures.

Some parents voiced concerns that the district has a pattern of overlooking serious student-on-student violence, while others emphasized the need for parents to take responsibility for their children’s behavior before the system is forced to intervene.

One commenter, a longtime counselor, shared:

“There is a definite uptick in violent and risky behavior. Home dynamics play a huge role. I’m terribly sorry this happened to your son.”

Others were more direct in their outrage.

The boy who attacked your son needs to be banned from the bus, suspended, and possibly sent to juvenile detention,” another parent wrote.

Many echoed similar concerns, describing previous incidents involving the same student or similar cases where, in their view, the district failed to act decisively.

Parents shared their experiences of pulling their children from the bus due to safety fears and expressed frustration over what they see as a lack of accountability.

Several community members have urged Sargent to take legal action against the attacker and the district.

Some have suggested expulsion for the student involved, while others are calling for policy reforms to strengthen school bus safety and district-wide bullying protocols.

File a civil lawsuit,” one parent commented. “If the school and parents won’t take action, the legal system must.

Our kids should feel safe on the bus and in school. If the system won’t protect them, then parents will demand change,” another parent added.

This assault has reignited a broader conversation about school safety, bullying, and discipline policies in St. Johns County.

Many families expressed that they moved to the area seeking safer schools but now feel those expectations are not being met.

Concerns were also raised about the district’s response times and follow-up actions in such cases.

Parents said they want stricter suspension policies, clearer accountability measures, and transparency regarding how incidents are handled.

This isn’t just bullying,” one community member wrote. “It’s assault — and it needs to be treated that way.

As the investigation continues, Sargent and her supporters are determined to push for change.

She has made it clear that she expects stronger action from both the school district and law enforcement to ensure that no child endures what her son experienced.

For many parents, this assault has become a rallying point for demanding immediate reform.

They are calling on the district to prioritize student safety on school buses, implement stricter consequences for violence, and ensure parents are held accountable for their children’s actions.
