A well-known coach and teacher in Steubenville, Ohio, has died after being struck by lightning while mowing his lawn at home. Joe Pierro, 60, passed away on Friday, September 4, just three weeks after retiring from a career that spanned more than three decades at Steubenville High School.
News of his death spread quickly through the community, with local schools and former colleagues sharing tributes online. Steubenville City Schools confirmed the loss in a Facebook post, calling it a sudden and painful blow to the district. The cause of death was not released right away, though later reports confirmed the lightning strike as the cause.
A Career Built on Mentorship
Pierro spent more than 30 years working with students in Steubenville, coaching both football and baseball while also teaching in the classroom. Colleagues say his influence went far beyond wins and losses. Steubenville High School described him as someone who helped young people grow, compete, and gain confidence in themselves, both on the field and off it.
Head football coach Reno Saccoccia, who worked alongside Pierro for years, remembered him as someone who brought energy and warmth to every day at the school. Saccoccia said Pierro took real pride in his work, staying focused when it counted while never losing his sense of humor with those around him. That mix of dedication and lightheartedness, Saccoccia said, is what people will miss most.
Just hours after learning of his death, Steubenville dedicated its Friday night football game to Pierro. Saccoccia said afterward that the players represented their late coach well and honored what he stood for throughout his career.

Pierro’s obituary painted a picture of a man who was easygoing, generous, and quick to make people feel comfortable. Friends and family described him as someone who built lasting relationships wherever he went, whether through coaching, spending time with loved ones, or simply lending a hand when someone needed one.
Outside of school, Pierro cherished time with his family and close friends. He especially loved being outdoors, and yard work at his own home was one of the simple pleasures he enjoyed most in his newly retired life. He is survived by his mother, Shirley, and his two children, Michael and Mia.
The Steubenville school district closed its tribute by saying Pierro will always be remembered as part of the Big Red family and that his legacy will continue through the many students and athletes he shaped over the years. Donations in his memory are being directed to Steubenville High School, according to his obituary.
