A tense verbal confrontation between Terrafirma import Justin Strings and Converge guard Alec Stockton almost turned physical following their PBA 50th Season Governors’ Cup matchup on Tuesday at the Ynares Center, according to witnesses at the venue.
The two players reportedly traded heated words during the customary post game handshakes at midcourt, moments after Converge sealed a commanding 120 to 103 victory over Terrafirma.
What started as a courtside disagreement soon spilled into the hallway leading toward the locker rooms, raising concern among onlookers that the situation could escalate further.
Tempers Flare Near the Tunnel
Eyewitnesses said Strings was seen approaching the area near the Converge dugout in the tunnel shortly after the final buzzer.
His teammates quickly stepped in, attempting to calm him down and keep him from getting closer to the rival squad. Security personnel also moved in fast, positioning themselves between the two sides to prevent any physical altercation from breaking out.
The situation prompted swift intervention from PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, along with Terrafirma coach Ronald Tubid and Converge coach Delta Pineda, who all rushed to defuse the tension before it could turn into a full blown incident.
Thanks to their quick response and the presence of bouncers, order was restored without any punches being thrown.
Unclear Trigger, Prior Friction on Court
As of this writing, the exact spark behind the confrontation between Strings and Stockton remains unclear.
However, it was noted that Strings had also exchanged words earlier with Converge enforcer Calvin Abueva, stemming from a hard foul committed against Abueva in the closing minutes of the game. That physical exchange may have contributed to the frustration that carried over into the postgame handshake line.
Reactions from fans online were mixed. Some praised Abueva’s physical style of play, saying other players should follow his approach on defense, while others speculated that Strings may have simply been overwhelmed by the physicality of Converge’s frontline, including forward Cameron Clark, throughout the contest.
For now, the PBA has not issued any official statement regarding possible sanctions or fines related to the incident.
