On behalf of the entire Union Public Schools community, I extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones.

The fatal crash occurred just before 6 p.m. on U.S. Highway 169 near Virginia Road, when two vehicles collided head-on and burst into flames, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The victims were part of the “Oklahoma Chaos,” a competitive traveling basketball team returning from a tournament.

Eight lives were lost, including Kyrin, his father Jaimon, Booker T. Washington High School student Donald “DJ” Laster, and youth basketball coach Wayne Walls.

One person, identified as Walls’s son, survived but was hospitalized in critical condition. Meanwhile, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
