Detroit, Michigan Native and University of Valley Forge Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Maurice Lewis Passes Away, Remembered for His Dedication to Student-Athletes

The Detroit, Michigan, and Phoenixville, Pennsylvania communities are mourning the untimely death of beloved longtime basketball coach Maurice Lewis.

Maurice Lewis passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2026; however, details surrounding his untimely death have not been disclosed yet.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Maurice Lewis was a cherished member of the Detroit sports community and touched the lives of numerous young athletes with his remarkable decade-long coaching career.

He began his athletic career in high school, where he excelled in multiple sports, and later continued his journey attending Olivet University, where he was a member of the men’s basketball team.

After earning his BA in sports and fitness administration from Olivet University in 2014, Maurice began his career as an amazing basketball coach.

He began his coaching career as a part-time assistant boys’ basketball coach at Robichaud Senior High School in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, in 2018 and served in that position for nearly three years.

Maurice Lewis further continued his coaching career, joining Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio, as an assistant basketball coach in 2021.

Similarly, in 2022, Maurice became the head men’s basketball coach at Community Christian College in Detroit, Michigan.

Throughout his stint of over two years, Maurice led his team at Community Christian College to several victories.

From August 2025 until his recent passing, Maurice Lewis was serving as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Valley Forge in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, and won the hearts of many with his leadership skills.

Late Maurice Lewis Was The Owner of Detroit Sports World

In addition to his coaching career, Maurice also contributed to the sports world as the owner of Detroit Sports World, a company established in 2015 that produces media coverage for professional Detroit teams such as the Pistons, Lions, Tigers, and so on.

The company that Maurice successfully ran and owned for over 11 years also provides sports news and entertainment, interviews with Professional College and High School athletes.

Beyond owning his own sports media company, Maurice Lewis served as a skills trainer at Blueprint Athletes from 2017 until his passing.

He also served as a fitness coach at Performance Academies and dedicated his life to teaching.

Maurice was a great teacher. He served as a physical education teacher at Summit Academy Schools from 2021 to 2024.

Prior to that, he served as a physical education teacher at Trillium Academy for three years and also served as a correction program coordinator at the State of Michigan for two years.

Furthermore, the untimely death of Maurice Lewis has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones.

Many of his loved ones are sharing his memories on social media and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Maurice Lewis’s contribution to the sports community and his kind and cheerful nature will always be remembered.

He is survived by his mother, Sharon Lewis, father, sisters, and the entire family. His family will soon provide details about Maurice’s funeral and memorial services.
