Alongside being a sports analyst, Sanders started his coaching career as the high school head coach.
First, he began as the head coach of the Prime Prep Academy, which he co-founded.
Then, he became the head coach of Triple-A Academy and the offensive coordinator for Trinity Christian High School, where he also coached his sons, Deion Sanders Jr., Shilo, and Shedeur Sanders.
The historically black (HBCU) Jackson State University Tigers hired Sanders as their 21st head coach on September 21, 2020.
Over three seasons, he guided Jackson State to a 27–6 record, including an 11-win season in the Fall semester of 2021.
Hence, the school won its first football title in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) since 2007.
Then, on December 3, 2022, Sanders became the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.
