2025 Mellen Granite Diggers Football Season Cancelled Due to Low Numbers Instead Eyes 2026 Butternut-Mercer Co-op

Low Numbers Force Mellen Granite Diggers Cancel, But Hope Shines for 2026

The Mellen Granite Diggers football team has hit a tough roadblock when the 2025 season has been officially canceled due to not enough players signing up.

Russ O’Dovero, who appears to be the head coach, shared the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post, expressing appreciation to those who worked hard to keep the season alive and outlining hope for a brighter future.

Coach O’Dovero gave a shout-out to Assistant Coach Tim Polencheck for his efforts during the July football camp and the first week of practice. He also thanked Rory Zwetow for handling equipment and lending a hand at practices.

Additionally, Mellen Athletic Directors Adam LaRose and Steve Eder were recognized for their near-daily efforts to evaluate whether the season could go on. Despite their hard work, the numbers just weren’t there.

The cancellation is a tough blow, especially for the dedicated players who showed up every day, sweating it out in the heat and humidity, fully committed to the game they love.

O’Dovero expressed deep disappointment for these kids, saying they “deserve better.

He reminded them that, much like football, life can be tough and unfair, but those challenges build character.

For the players who gave their all, this news stings, and the community feels their pain.

Ta Leigh commented that her son Camdyn is “beyond disappointed and frustrated,” noting that high school years are fleeting.

O’Dovero responded, sharing her frustration and lamenting that Camdyn and other juniors had the potential for a standout season, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

He emphasized how brief the window for high school sports is, saying,

“After that, there will be decades upon decades upon decades to not play. Nobody feels worse than I do about how this all turned out.”

His words carry the weight of someone who feels the loss as deeply as the players.

Others chimed in with support and sadness.

Carlo Kumpula pointed out that Mellen isn’t alone small schools across the country, even in football-crazy Texas, are facing similar struggles, with some dropping to six-man football due to low numbers.

“Sorry to hear. You’re not alone, though. I just read about a school in Texas that had to drop from 11-man to 6-man this fall due to low numbers. t looks like co-op programs are the only way to save small-school sports. Been happening over here in football, baseball, and softball for years. Too bad your M/B/M football co-op couldn’t have been launched this year. Thanks for your efforts in trying to keep the Granite Diggers on the field.”

He expressed hope for the planned 2026 co-op with Butternut and Mercer, noting that co-op programs are often the lifeline for small-school sports.

Calla Erickson called the cancellation “unfortunate” but held out hope for next year, while Jamie Majeski shared that her son Jaxtyn, who stayed dedicated to training, is “really bummed” about missing out on a sport he loves.

“Unfortunate that it had to end like this. Hopefully they can get the numbers they need for a season next year.”

Looking ahead, there’s a hope as part of the WIAA 2026 football conference realignment, Mellen is set to join forces with the Butternut and Mercer school districts in a football co-op.

The goal is to pool enough players to field a team, ensuring that Mellen’s high school athletes aren’t denied the chance to play.

O’Dovero noted that they’ll be working hard over the next 10 months to make this happen and promised to keep the community updated.

For now, the Mellen Granite Diggers’ 2025 season is off the table, leaving players, coaches, and fans disappointed but determined.

Coach O’Dovero encourages reaching out to Athletic Directors Adam LaRose and Steve Eder if anybody have questions or want to stay in the loop.

The road ahead may be tough, but the spirit of the Granite Diggers is far from defeated.
