Retirement Life

Paul Westhead began his coaching career in 1968 at Cheltenham High School. After two years, he coached the men’s basketball team and taught English at La Salle University.

The first NBA team he was the head coach of was the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers won the 1980 NBA Finals in Westhead’s first year as coach, competing against Philadelphia.

After encountering disagreements with Magic Johnson, Paul was dismissed from the Lakers. It is believed that Johnson was the one who set up the coach’s termination.

A 1987 book titled “Winnin’ Times,” which delves into the Lakers’ history, claimed that Lakers owner Jerry Buss had planned to remove Westhead many days before the incident occurred.

After departing from the Lakers in 1981, he coached several teams until 2014 before retiring.
