This article was last updated by on

Danny Garcia has made his ethnicity clear several times during his interview. The American boxer is proud of his Puerto Rican roots and is a Latino.

Garcia was born to Puerto Rican parents Angel and Maritza but was raised in Philadelphia. With his outspoken father, Angel Garcia, Danny has formed a solid partnership not only inside the boxing ring but also outside of it.

His father was the one to introduce him to boxing, and after Dannt found his feet in the ring, they built their partnership outside of it. The father-son duo are businessmen outside the ring and are involved in real estate.

Last month, in his interview with the Boxing Scene, the 35-year-old said he was hoping for one final championship reign. On December 9, Garcia will take on the current WBA middleweight champion, Erislandy Lara.

Lara is the favorite for the match, but if Garcia does the impossible, he will become a three-division champion.

Danny Garcia Ethnicity: Puerto Rican Roots

Danny Garcia was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Puerto Rican parents, making him a Latino. On many occasions, the professional boxer has made it clear that he might’ve been born in Philly, but his blood is Puerto Rican.

In an interview, Danny Garcia said, “I could have been born on the moon, but I am still Puerto Rican. Even though I am from Philly, that is not my heritage.”

Danny said it was important his Puerto Rican roots are recognized as he believed the Caribbean island needed more distinction in the boxing world. The boxer’s dad, Angel Garcia, hails from Naguabo, and his mother, Maritza Garcia, is from Bayamon.

In his previous interview with The Bleachers Report in 2014, Danny said the Puerto Rican fans had embraced him despite him being in the US and not on the island.

Puerto Rico has always been known for its great fighters, but it didn’t have a reigning world champion in 2014. Danny used this opportunity to capitalize on his fight against Mauricio Herrera.

The fight happened in his mother’s hometown, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and Garcia defeated Herrera. And though many were convinced that Herrera had won the match, the judges favored Garcia.

Before the fight, Danny said he was happy to fight in Puerto Rico for a title and represent Puerto Rico in his fight against Herrera and forever on the boxing stage.

Danny Garcia Nationality

Danny Garcia holds an American passport and is a United States citizen. He has a rugged Philadelphia fighting background, with his father, Angel Garcia being his first trainer.

Garcia was introduced to boxing at age five by his dad. He grew up idolizing Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Julio Cesar Chavez, but his favorite boxer went by the name Angel Garica.

Angel would tell his son he would beat Tyson with ease, and young Danny would believe it. But as he grew older, Danny clearly understood his dad didn’t stand a chance.

Danny’s father, Angel Garcia, has been known in the media for his outspoken nature. In 2012, before Danny fought Amir Khan, Angel targetted the boxer’s nationality.

Angel said, “he had never met a Pakistani that could fight.” He also used the N-word several times at the boxer Keith Thurman. Angel was later banned from speaking in the press events leading up to their fight.

Unlike Angel, his wife, Maritza, has tried to keep herself away from the public limelight. Previously, in an interview, Maritza said it was extremely nerve-wracking to be the mother of a boxer.

She said those comments before Danny fought Errol Spence Jr, and till that time, Maritza hadn’t missed a single fight. Danny did lose against Errol but won his last fight against Jose Benavidez Jr in 2022.
