12-year-old Lamar “LJ” Holmes Jr., a sixth grader at Dacula Middle School, died after a week-long coma caused by a severe asthma attack during a soccer game on May 4, 2025.
His sudden death left his family, friends, and community heartbroken. However, his lively spirit and positive energy still shine in their memories.
LJ was a force on and off the field.
A multi-sport athlete, he excelled in football and soccer, bringing passion and leadership to every game.
At Dacula Middle School, where he was a beloved student, LJ was more than just a talented player—he was a natural leader who inspired those around him.
His coaches and teammates admired his dedication and how he lifted others enthusiastically.
Born to Lamar Holmes Sr. and Whitney (Huskey) Holmes, LJ was born on April 16, 2013, and grew up in a loving family alongside his elder sister and brother.
From a young age, he was full of life, always ready to make people laugh or rally a group for fun.

“His personality lit up the room, You look around at this middle school and see all these balloons and all these people—he was the life of the party. He definitely could get a crowd together. Everybody wanted to be LJ’s friend. If I had to say one word about my son, it would be ‘the great,’ because that’s definitely what he was. The great, for sure.”

Lamar Sr.’s father was an excellent Offensive Tackle at Southern Miss, described LJ as a trailblazer, and said:
“In his 12 years, LJ touched so many different people from so many different walks of life—it’s unreal. LJ was the first to go out on a limb and do things. He was never one to sit back and follow someone else’s lead. If you didn’t like it, oh well—LJ was still going to go have a good time doing what he was doing. “

The Week Following LJ’s Asthma Attack Was An Emotional Blur For The Holmes Family
While LJ fought for his life in the ICU, the Dacula community gathered around them.
Family friend Lindsay Paul and Dacula Athletic Association shared a heartfelt appeal on social media, writing,
The response was overwhelming.
Friends, neighbors, and even strangers poured out love, offering meals, donations, and countless prayers.
Lamar Sr. said-:
“We’re numb as parents, We’re really making it with the support and love of the community and our neighbors. We couldn’t expect it to be as much as it did. So many people have been pouring out love and prayers. That’s how we’re able to make it right now. “

On Monday, May 5, 2025, Dacula Middle School became a place of both sorrow and celebration as the community gathered to honor LJ’s memory.
With the school’s support, Whitney organized a balloon release that brought together classmates, teachers, coaches, and loved ones.
Balloons filled the sky, each symbolizing the love and light LJ brought into the world.
Dacula Middle School shared a touching tribute on social media, posting a photo of the balloon release with the caption:
Whitney spoke gratefully about the school’s role in the event.
“I just put it together,I asked the school if we could have it here. They were so honored to do it. And as you can see, they didn’t disappoint—the teachers, the principals, the friends. Their love has just been so outpouring, and I just feel like that’s what’s keeping us going at this moment.”
