According to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department, the accident happened on westbound I-96, where traffic was slowed due to a construction zone.

A semi-tractor trailer had stopped, and a pickup truck, driven by Ryan, either slowed or stopped behind it.

A box truck following closely behind failed to stop in time, rear-ending Ryan’s pickup and pushing it into the semi-truck’s trailer.

Both Ryan’s pickup and the box truck became engulfed in flames, trapping the drivers inside.

Despite the efforts of first responders, both Ryan and the box truck driver were pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-truck driver was unharmed.

Sheriff’s deputies noted that heavy traffic and the box truck driver’s failure to maintain a safe distance likely caused the collision.

The response involved multiple agencies, including the Michigan State Police, Portland and Belding police, Portland EMS, and Berlin-Orange Township firefighters, who collaborated to manage the tragic scene.

A Heartfelt Goodbye From A Grieving Wife

Ryan’s wife, Ellis Beavers, shared the heartbreaking news in a raw and emotional Facebook post. She wrote:

” It is with extreme sadness that I need to share some heartbreaking news. My husband Ryan was involved in a horrific crash yesterday around 3 p.m. while headed back from a stop in Lansing. It took several hours to find out any information, but ultimately I was informed that Ryan was gravely injured and did not survive. I am numb. I am scared. I have lost my husband, and I don’t know what to do or say.”

The organizers emphasize that donations are not expected but appreciated during this difficult time.
