Born on August 24, 1944, in Calion, Arkansas, Tommy grew up embracing the values of hard work, family, and faith that would guide him throughout his remarkable journey.

From his earliest days, he cultivated a quiet strength that would come to define him as a teacher, coach, mentor, and cherished member of the Fordyce community.

For 39 years, Tommy Harper dedicated his life to shaping the lives of young people through education and athletics.

As a coach and teacher, he left a lasting mark in the schools of Thornton, Kingsland, Hampton, and Fordyce, Arkansas.

Known for his passion for basketball and his unwavering belief in the power of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, Tommy became much more than a coach to his players—he became a guiding light, a father figure, and a mentor who saw the potential in others even when they didn’t see it in themselves.

Tommy Harper’s approach to life was rooted in faith and service.

He led by example, demonstrating integrity, compassion, and strength in both his professional and personal life.

His gentle spirit, unwavering commitment to his values, and ability to inspire are traits that earned him the deep respect and affection of all who knew him.

Beyond his career, Tommy cherished his role as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

His family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Dell Harper; his son, Brae Harper; daughter-in-law, Candace; and his treasured grandson, Riggs Harper, whom he affectionately called his “Rising Star.”

Tommy Harper passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, at the age of 80.

His death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, former students, and the broader Fordyce community.

Though his passing brings sadness, it also offers an opportunity to celebrate a life that was fully lived in service to others and to God.

His wife, Mary Harper, shared the news with grace, expressing comfort in knowing that Tommy is now free from pain and suffering, resting in the peace of the Lord. As she wrote,

“Tommy left this morning to be with the Lord. No more pain and suffering!! Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Visitation services will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce, Arkansas.

A celebration of Tommy Harper’s life is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., also at Benton Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul Cayce and Rev. Rickey Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery near Bearden.

The Harper family has requested that memorials in Tommy’s honor be made to the Fordyce Methodist Church, reflecting his lifelong commitment to faith and community.
