Cale And Taylor Makar’s Parents Were Also Hockey Players In The Youth

Cale and Taylor can be future teammates in the future, if the younger brother continues his form.

Gary Makar and Laura MacGregor Makar are two proud parents of Cale and Taylor Makar, who both play in the NHL and AHL.

While both parents shared the same interest, they had separate career paths, unlike their sons.

The senior Child, Cale, also has memories of holding a stick from the age of one or two, which is probably one of the many reasons the elder child has become one of the most successful defensemen in the NHL.

Cale has won the NHL Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy, and the Norris Trophy, and has even made an All-Star appearance.

On the other hand, his 24-year-old sibling, Taylor Makar, is also trying to establish his name just like his elder brother.

He helped Maine win the Hockey East Championship by scoring two goals in the final and signed a professional contract with the Colorado Avalanche. However, he is currently playing for the Colorado Eagles (AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche), working his way up to the NHL.

Taylor sees his elder brother as a significant role model and also said, “We talk every day. He’s so mature. I’ve learned a lot of stuff from him.”

Hockey Influence From Father’s Cousin Tom Lysiak

Gary Makar, the father, also has a long history tied to the game of Hockey. He worked for a marketing organization that represented Calgary Flames, and was even a big fan of the professional ice hockey team.

Additionally, as Gary Makar’s Cousin is another former NHL player, Tom Lysiak, who played for the Atlanta Flames and Chicago Blackhawks in the 1970s and 1980s, this might have had a positive effect on both Gary and Laura Makar; hence, they wanted their offspring to follow in the same field.

Gary, as previously mentioned, introduced their kids, Cale and Taylor, to sports from a very young age and were also taken to skate on ponds near their home in Calgary.

Laura is also seen as a supporting mother even without a rich sports background. Even in an interview with Dead Spin, Cale jokingly said, “fully Avs converted,’ referring to the Colorado Avalanche, which is also his brother, Taylor’s team.

The Parents even introduced Hockey to Taylor’s brother at the age of four by taking him to Crowchild Twin Arena.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • Both Cale and Taylor Makar were born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The city is known for its hockey roots and passion for the sport.
  • While the parents are also Canadian natives from Alberta, they share Ukrainian and Scottish lineage, respectively.
