Cierra Jackson credits her mother’s battle with cancer as a driving force behind her achievements.

Cierra Jackson has become a rising star in track and field, earning her place among the most accomplished athletes in Fresno State’s history.

The 2020 Chandler High School alum carved her name into the record books by winning the NCAA championship in the discus throw with a stunning first attempt of 215 feet, 11 inches—setting a new meet record.

Jackson’s triumph made her the first individual outdoor national champion in Fresno State history, solidifying her reputation as a force in the sport.

Her athletic journey has been anything but linear. Initially a high school cheerleader, Jackson transitioned to track and field and quickly displayed raw power and explosive strength.

Fresno State throws coach Joe Riccio, who had recruited her since high school, recognized her potential early on.

Jackson’s relentless work ethic paid off as she overcame setbacks, including missed NCAA qualifications in earlier seasons, to become one of the world’s top discus throwers—currently ranked No. 11 globally.

In addition to her NCAA title, Jackson holds three Fresno State records: outdoor shot put, discus throw, and indoor shot put.

Now competing as a professional athlete under the Elite Athletes Network, she continues to push her limits, aiming to one day achieve her ultimate goal of becoming an Olympian.

Tyisha faced a life-changing battle with Stage 2 breast cancer when Cierra was just 11 years old.

Despite the challenges of chemotherapy and recovery, Tyisha remained a pillar of positivity and resilience for her children.

Her determination left a deep impression on Cierra, who credits her mother’s courage as one of the driving forces behind her athletic achievements.

“Even when it was hard for her, she made sure to stay positive for us,” Cierra once said, recalling how her mother’s strength inspired her to persevere through her own struggles in sports.

By the time Cierra entered high school, Tyisha had overcome cancer, becoming a symbol of perseverance that continues to motivate her daughter today.
