Bill Petko, a beloved Shot put and discus coach from Texas, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 12, 2025.

His wife, Kathleen Halpin Petko, called friends and family with the sad news.

Bill Petko was a man of strength, dedication, and heartfelt passion. He served as a shot put and discus coach for years, but he was so much more than a coach to his athletes.

His true talent was seeing potential and believing fiercely in his players, sparking in them a love for hard work that went far beyond the weight room.

Moreover, his lessons in discipline and dedication propelled his athletes to unimaginable heights in their sports careers.

When he wasn’t coaching, a long bike ride and his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers fueled his spirit. His passions mirrored his coaching.

Thanks for the memories and the life lessons, Coach Petko, thanks for being in the right place at the right time for this kid who needed it.
Going for a long run around the old school today for ya coach. Rest in peace❤️

He leaves behind a legacy of strength, dedication, and unwavering love that will forever echo in circles of his shot put and discus athletes, his students, and his cherished family.

Bill was a Texas coaching legend who dedicated his life to shaping young people.

He believed in the power of discipline, focus, and sheer effort, teaching his athletes that the weight in their hands was far less important than the strength of their character.

His voice was a steady mix of encouragement, technical wisdom, and firm belief in every competitor he coached. He was a man of steadfast passions, and his loyalty to the Pittsburgh Steelers was unmatched.

He built his life around the things he held dear, including family, coaching, and a good-natured rivalry on game day.

My good friend of 32 years, Bill Petko, passed away today unexpectedly. His wife called with the sad news. We taught together, had breakfast often, and used to jog at the park. We just had lunch last week. He was an educator, a coach, and loved his Steelers. I’m going to miss my pal.
